Which Australian state used to be known as Van Diemen's Land?

♥ lani s
Van Diemen's Land was the original name used by Europeans for the island of Tasmania, now part of Australia. The Dutch explorer Abel Tasman was the first European to explore Tasmania. He named the island Anthoonij van Diemenslandt in honor of Anthony van Diemen, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies who had sent Tasman on his voyage of discovery in 1642. In 1803, the island was colonized by the British as a penal colony with the name Van Diemen's Land.

Van Diemen's Land was the primary penal colony in Australia from 1830s to 1853. In order to remove the unsavoury connotations with crime associated with its name, in 1856 Van Diemen's Land was renamed Tasmania in honour of Abel Tasman.

Tasmania is an island state of southeast Australia located 200 km south of the eastern side of the continent, consisting of the island of Tasmania along with several smaller islands and separated from the mainland by Bass Strait. Tasmania nicknamed as "The Apple Isle" or "Holiday Isle" joined Australia in 1901. Its capital and largest city is Hobart.♥

Tasmania.

I've been told they have a really good flower festival there.

And there are trees there that are over 2000 years old!

Tasmania, also know as the Apple Isle was formerly known as Van Diemens Land. It was a convict colony the main prison being at Port Arthur, famous for the Port Arthur Masscre in which 35 people were gunned down by Martin Bryant.

Tasmania is Australia's Island (and Smallest) State and is South of Victoria, across what is known as Bass Strait.

Tasmania has some of the world's oldest growth forests and tallest trees. Tasmania has some of the most beautiful scenery in Australia, but has also destroyed some of its beauty particularly along its west coast (queenstown in particular).

Tasmania was where I found my first love. Should've married her. Would luv to find her Sharon McGrath from Lauderdale.
