Which Melbourne suburb of these is best?

Hawthorne East
Kooyong
Armadale
Ashburton
Glen Iris
Caulfield East
Caulfield North
Malvern

Positives and Negatives? Which would have the most reasonable rent and why?

Any help would be appreciated, I am tying to figure out where to stay when I go over there to study.

Sorry to say there's not much difference between these suburbs. They're all in the same general area of south-east Melbourne, pretty expensive, affluent, middle-class, conservative... They are good places to live, well served by public transport and freeways, not too far from the city, they've got hospitals, large shopping centres, sports facilities, not too far from the bay beaches... But ~

for a young person, assuming you are young (and single), they'd be pretty dull. Livelier places would be St Kilda, Albert Park, Prahran, all in that same general area, or north of the Yarra River, there are Richmond, Collingwood, Carlton, Fitzroy, Clifton Hill, Northcote, which have more street life, cafes, young people, bars, and other hip places to go.

They wouldn't be any cheaper though, unfortunately: there's a shortage of rental accommodation at present that is forcing up prices everywhere. The best way to find a place is to go the actual noticeboards at your Uni or college, and look for shared accommodation.

Here's a tip for working out the true cost of renting a place: find out the MONTHLY rental, multiply by 12, then divide by 52. (This is because agents sometimes underquote weekly rents.)

Here's a link to a real estate site in Melbourne:
>2&from=0&to=350&proptypes=&ptdes=All%20Property%20Types&searchterm=Malvernhttp://www.domain.com.au/Public/SearchResults.aspx?mode=rent&Refine=1&state=VIC&areas=East&sub=Malvern&bedrooms=>2&from=0&to=350&proptypes=&ptdes=All%20Property%20Types&searchterm=Malvern

GOOD LUCK!

From the suburbs you have listed, I think that the Glen Iris - Ashburton area is the best because this area is greener and nicer.

Other than that, I think all of the suburbs You've listed, they're all the same.

Oh, if you are jewish the Caulfield area is full of Jewish people. There are also very expensive houses in Malvern.

Again, I think that the Ashburton - Glen Iris area is nicer than the Hwathorn - Kooyong - Armadale area.

Ashburton is the best, in my opinion, but quite expensive and so are the others u have listed.

i reckon hawthorn east and kooyong as they closest to city and near better shops etc however I agree with answer 1 as st kilda and prahran are much livelier and these ones are more upper class and more family areas

Where are you studying? Why don't you choose a suburb near your educational institution? There are tons of students (secondary and tertiary) in the city and always lots to do.

The suburbs you've listed are family-ish suburbs with houses on decent sized blocks of land, with lots of people with kids and retired people. They're close to lots of private schools (and some great state schools). None stands out as a great suburb to live in as a student if you want to be near other students in similar situations.

If, however, you're moving here with a family (and if this is you sorry for making assumptions) all of these suburbs are great. If this is you, I'd pick Hawthorn East, Kooyong, Armadale or Malvern - they're a bit more undulating (but it is Melbourne, so hardly), with a few more trees than your other choices, but really there's not much in it.

In terms of rent, I'd guess that none of those suburbs would have inexpensive rent. Check www.domain.com.au.

G'day,

I dun think anyone can beat Zuch's answer.

Just to add on the estate websites:
www.realestate.com.au
www.realestateview.com.au
www.domain.com.au

I'm guessing that you are going to study either in Swinburne or Monash Caulfield. Am I right?

Good luck :)
