Which city is better Melbourne or Sydney? And why?

Am planning to move to Australia. Not decided about the city though.
Any suggestions.

In general, Sydney is more expensive than Melbourne. This is the case for housing and rent in particular. Sydney has a larger sprawl as well, with the cheaper areas further away from the city. There are trains that go direct to the city, however during peak hour they are overcrowded and usually late. You need to have a lot of money to enjoy the things that is special in Sydney and currently we are experiencing a rental problem. Melbourne is by far a much more cultural city and personally I think provides a better lifestyle. The city sprawl is smaller, the public services are more accessible and it has a great cafe lifestyle! See www.domain.com.au for rent/housing and http://mycareer.com.au/ to compare.

Hate to tell you this, but that's a stupid question. Which city do you think is better - Paris or London? You're not comparing oranges and oranges.

Melbourne and Sydney have one thing in common - they're both in Australia (two - if you consider they're both situated on the east coast). Apart from that, Sydney and Melbourne are very different cities - each fabulous in its own individual way.

To give you some idea of comparison - and this is a VERY BROAD comparison - Sydney is more like Los Angeles. It's bright lights, time spent on the beach, movie studios - a hedonistic lifestyle. Melbourne is more like New York. It's the financial capital, Tiffany's, art galleries - a cultural lifestyle.

Of course, you will find designer fashion labels in Sydney; and Melbourne also produces movies - but the two cities are very, very different. Each one brilliant in its own way.

So for you to decide which one you want to call home - you're going to need to draw up a list of things that interest you, and then try to find the best match.

It's a bit silly to rate a city on its attractions when somebody is planning to move there. Sure, the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge are pretty, but they don't have much to do with your everyday life if you live in Sydney. Also, most people in Sydney can't afford to live near the beach, so you can end up in a huge traffic jam trying to get to the beach on a hot day.
It's also odd to compare on the basis of football because Aussie Rules is more popular in Melbourne and their rugby league team is in the Sydney football grand final. So somehow I think that argument is pretty dumb.
You should base your choice on rent costs, public transport (unless you have a car), and affordability. Perhaps other things like weather and access to the country are important. Melbourne is slightly cheaper than Sydney. If you want to live somewhere near the water in Sydney, it costs a lot. Public transport in Sydney is not great if you live more than 5km from the city centre. Trains can be slow and buses often aren't on time. While people claim the lifestyle in Sydney is better, it's also really expensive.

i believe sydney is a more expensive place to live. but more oppurtunities are available in sydney. melbourne is a chic city, and is renowned for being always able to do something, and the people are exciting. better course is at sydney, but also consider how far away will be from where you live now, to go visit family and friends etc.

But best bets, try to visit both of them! They're both very beautiful and unique, and then make your own decision

good luck and hope all goes well

Are you chinese? because Melbourne is the cultural capital of the country possibly the world. It has a lovely chinatown etc. and nice people, cheap housing but good quality. Melbourne has beaches and unpredictable which means if you get bored with one weather it will eventually change to a better type eg. Rain - Sun Cloudy - Sun and reverse.

Hope you choose Melbourne as it IS the best city. Not Sydney, Never Brisbane but only Melbourne.

Let us know what your final decision is mate! :)

Melbourne all the way.
Cultural capital of Australia!!!
and maybe Sydney has attractions...but you're not living in those right?
You can also go to the beach in Melbourne, and shopping is better too. Collins Street, anyone?
And it's cheaper by the way.
There's Fed Square, Phillip Island, Great Ocean Road, Flinders, Carlton Gardens, Melbourne Zoo, MCG
If you like tennis definitely Melbourne... Australian Open in January!

Sydney. I have many reasons for saying this. Sydney has some of the best attractions like the Opera House and the Sydney harbour bridge. Where as Melbourne has Federation Square and i cant think of what else melbourne has. Sydney has some of the best footy teams. for example, manly sea eagles, sydney roosters, parramatta eels, south sydney rabbitohs. sydney has great resturants. and last but not least, i live near sydney and love going up to sydney for a day trip every once and a while.

if you do move to sydney and run out of things to do you could always have a ride on the jetcruiser around the harbour, or you could just go on a ferry and have a nice relaxing ride around the harbour.

if you need any more help, look on the net for attractions. hopefully that will help you

good luck

Mick
If you like beaches, come to Sydney. Melbourne is known for having the weather of all seasons in 1 day (1-30 degree range). Have you considered Brisbane? I have been in Sydney for 4 years and plannig to move to Brisbane.

Brisbane cos its so chilled out
