Which city is better: Melbourne or Sydney? Please list and/or discuss the reasons.?

Melbourne. The people are nicer, the traffic is less, navigation is easier, better shopping, better cafes, bars and restaurants, better sport and better events. Also, the Melbourne climate is more favourable- it was rated one of the best climates in the world, because there is no snow, and the summers are bearable. Also, if you don't like the current weather, wait 1 hour, and it will be different. In Melbourne, you can live the dream of four seasons in one day!

Of course, this answer all depends on what you want from where you live.

Keep in mind the Sydney/Melbourne debate has been going on since Federation in 1901. Some would say this extends all the way back to 1800s.

I personally prefer Melbourne by a great length.

i've only been to sydney once and i found the people were quite rude.. everyones nicer in Melbourne.. but Sydney has monorails which is fun. and the opera house, harbour bridge (which isnt as good as you think when you see it in person)... If you've never been to either, i'd say melbourne is best to see first

Although Sydney Harbour is very pretty & would have the better weather, I prefer Melbourne. The people seem much friendlier, & its heaps easier to find your way around.

Melbourne- Cosmopolitan, Sporting Capital, Fashion Capital, Transport, Affordability (At least better than Sydney), Culture, Grid-like streets

Sydney- Business, Harbour Bridge, Bondi

CONS
Melbourne- Connex's bad service, rapid weather changes, VCE competition

Sydney- Known for snobby people, hard to get around unlike Melbournes grid, Racial tensions (But I guess these exist everywhere)

TO SUM IT UP: Melbourne is the best ! Although, I may be biased :P

Better for What? is the first response.
Melbourne has better public transport, (The train operator Connex is not to blame for the current problems, the Gov't. and many commuters are the biggest problem.)

Weather. Melbourne is a drier climate than Sydney. Rainfall records prove it. (Wish it would rain here though, we badly need it.) Sydney slightly cooler but much wetter.

Sydney Harbour is much more scenic than Melbourne Port Philip Bay, especially when approaching by ship.

Tallest building/Lookouts. Melbourne wins here, the Rialto and Eureka are both much taller than the Tower in Sydney.

Melbourne is the Sports capital of the world, with every sport that matters, (Aussie Rules, Tennis, Cricket, Golf. and so on,) and even sports that don't matter. (Rugby, Soccer, basketball.)

Beaches. On a par, but probably Melbourne has more safe swimming beaches.

It can be argued Sydney has trans too. It's called LIGHT RAIL.
Other than that Sydney is great in terms of Business, culture, sport, lifestyle. It may be its infrastructure that is lacking as well as living costs.
