Depends what you're looking for. I personally prefer Brisbane.

Sydney by far. Brisbane is OK if you like country towns but Sydney is a city. By the way, crime and violence per head of population is lower in Sydney than it is in Brisbane. In any case they are low in both cities despite the opinions of idiots like John Laws and Alan Jones

Sydney without a doubt! Best harbour in the world, great beaches (just as good as any near Brisbane), great food, nice people, awesome bars & clubs. Close to the blue mountains, snowy mountains, and national parks.

Well, Both cities have about the same climate but if I had to choose go with Adelaide.

If you want culture (a wide choices of plays, concerts, opera etc) Sydeny is the place. It is very crowded, and people are very status orientated there (brands, the car you drive, the suburb you live in). They may have beaches, but trying to find a spot to put your towel is ridiculous. On the other hand Brisbane is the fastest growing city in Australia. Land is getting more expensive. There definitely is more space there, nicer people (probably because they have more space). They (Brisbane) are becoming more and more cultured with Museums, art galleries, big concerts, musicals and plays and lovely parks. It has easy access to the Gold Coast (another great city - my home) with fantastic nightlife, beaches, vineyards, mountains. Close to the Sunshine coast (more beaches, mountains, vineyards), [It actually has been predicted that the Gold Coast, Brisbane and the sunshine coast will join to form a Mega city within 10 years]; 2hr drive to Byron Bay which is so fun, 1 hour to Toowoomba (vineyards, mountains, flower festivals, home cooking, country etc). It has warmer winters than Sydney (every winter I freeze my knockers off-winds from the Snoweys). Brisbane is on the beautiful Brisbane river. It's huge! All in all, Brisbane has a better quality of live, but if you want to climb the Status ladder, to push ahead in the corporate world or to be totally stressed go to Sydney (they do have good public transport though).

And the winner is .......... Brisbane !

I live in Sydney myself but I found that people in Brisbane are more friendlier and helpful than people in Sydney. I have also lived in Melbourne for 2 years and it's very similar atmosphere to Brisbane.

If I had to choose between Sydney or Brisbane, I'd go for Brisbane !

Sydney has more to offer, but is a harder place to live and more expensive. Brisbane offers all you need and it's cheaper to live.

People in Sydney are pretentious and people in Brisbane are friendly and always very polite and very nice.

redgypsywine
better in what way exactly????

they are very similiar - Sydney being far bigger and more populated of course. - they both are on the coastline, with beaches north and south of each city, similiar in crime.....
housing is different, Sydney is more crammed up no yards to play in, and is basically a concrete jungle with rats. Brisbane however is spread right out and plenty of space in the back yards, not too polluted or noisy and they are both experiencing water restrictions from lack of rain.

Brisbane

Sydney is full of Asians who don't speak English and Indians who don't shower

Its like as soon as they get off the plane these damn immigrants pitch a tent in their little community and ignore the rest of the city.

99% of them haven't even been outside the city and seen the 'real' oz.

its a pretty segregated city.

Brisbane. Too much violence in Sydney. Ask about Cronulla or Redfern.
