The busiest Cities are normally the least friendly as people do not have "time" to be friendly.

From my experience of a few years in Sydney I would say that the tourists there are friendly, but the locals, as with most cities in the world, are busy in there own lives.

I then moved up to the Brisbane area, and have to say that people do "seem" friendler. But why ? The normal local "Brisbanites" are just as busy in their lives as "Sydneysiders", but what I found was that a larger number of people had chosen to live around Brisbane because it was quieter, less rushed, and therefore more people had time to be friendly.

The bottom line is that the quieter and smaller the City, the more likely to have more people that are less busy, and friendlier.

However, at another extreme, in a local very small suburb to me, there is very little friendliness as all the boat owners are queing up at the boat ramp to get their boats in the water, for a bit of relaxation :)
(Maybe they are the ones coming down from the City though )

We are all australians, and we are all human. Wherever you go, there will be an even mix of friendly and unfriendly people.

We went to Australia on our honeymoon. I loved the beach on the Gold Coast, but Melborne and the Outback was very good also. Americans are well received down there. Very friendly! xox

I have travelled australia extensively and really you find friendly people everywhere but I think the smaller the city the more friendly so I would say Hobart followed by Perth as Perth is a little more isolated and with isolation People seem to stick a bit closer together. Darwin would come a close 3rd to me as With the heat up there people are a bit more laid back so not so much in a rush as the bigger cities .I come from the Gold Coast where I find a very mixed bunch but in Brisbane where my friend lives all her neighbours are very nice

I live in Adelaide and don't think all that much of it, but have had several visitors from Europe and the USA and with out fail everyone comments on how friendly people are in Adelaide???????????????

I'd have to say Hobart - people say hello, are friendly if you need directions and are pretty laid back. I'd say Brisbane next, then Perth. Melbourne I think the lest friendly city - people walk into you on the street and don't even say sorry and most people there don't seem like they'd give you the time of day...

sydney is what i like to call the busy state along side melbourne and perth, I really enjoy QLD, i currently live in melbourne and was born in QLD, people in QLD are so energetic yet really laid back, i get alot of comments saying how bubbly my personality is and i owe it to QLD! :)

I'd love to say melbourne, but i think you'd find friendlier up in country towns probably especially of QLD & NSW.

Definitely Brisbane, moved from NSW 9 years ago after living in numerous states, and haven't looked back. Great city, great people.

I've lived in Sydney n.s.w all my life and i'd have to agree with someone else.
Brisbane is a hell of a lot friendlier than Sydney

definately brisbane, its like a big, little town if you know what i mean. Everyone is really outgoing, friendly and relaxed. Where as in cities like sydney everyone is a bit more uptight and career focused.

haha, every state is so biased which is turn makes them appear so unfriendly to the other states. Cities aren't known for being friendly, you will always come across some pricks but at the same time you'll meet some friendly strangers.

You can't label one city friendlier then another.
