Papua New Guinea is the closest country to the Australian mainland, but because Australia is so huge New Zealand will be closer to where you are in Australia depending on what part of Australia you are in. Indonesia is also pretty close
Papua New Guinea is way up north east near a mostly uninhabited part of Australia, whereas New Zealand is to the south east of Sydney and Melbourne which which is the most heavily populated part of Australia. Indonesia lies to the north and north west of Australia.
