Papua New Guinea is the closest country to the Australian mainland, but because Australia is so huge New Zealand will be closer to where you are in Australia depending on what part of Australia you are in. Indonesia is also pretty close

Papua New Guinea is way up north east near a mostly uninhabited part of Australia, whereas New Zealand is to the south east of Sydney and Melbourne which which is the most heavily populated part of Australia. Indonesia lies to the north and north west of Australia.

Australia's a big country. PNG is closest to the northern part of Australia but New Zealand is closest to the South Eastern part.

It looks like Papua New Guinea (to the north of the northern tip of Queensland)
