Compare infant mortality rates. The US does not look so good by comparison. Australia 4.6 deaths per 1000 live births, USA 6.4 per 1000 live births. Actually, both of these are low by world standards but the US is higher than many European countries and approximately double the rate of Japan at 3.2 deaths per 100 live births.
The Australian health system is not free but involves patient, insurance and state co-payments. Health insurance is not linked to employment here.
From this side of the Pacific, from what we hear and read in Australia, it seems Matt F may be partially correct. |

I don't know much about Australia's health care but the United States is awful. The American system is based on profitability of pharmaceutical and insurance companies. |

For health care system i would definately have to say Australia. Many people i know have gone over to the US and had to pay through the nose for basic health care. In australia you dont have to be insured to recieve basic services under the medicare system. In fact you can go see the doctor for free if they bulk bill. On the Child care issue i think it is up in the air as less and less people are willing to stay home to look after kids (i am not saying they should or shouldnt) but the child care system is struggling to meet demand and i believe at least in australia it is underfunded as are workers who work there. |

Austrailia, because the american system is already strained. |

Well Australia's system is by no means great, but from what I've heard and studied at school about the American welfare system we have it pretty good in comparison.
Childcare is a bit iffy at the moment, though... |

I dont know about USA, but here in Aus there has been a bit of a lack of child care facilities. The hospitals are underfunded and there are huge waiting lines. Thats all i know |

I recently moved to the US from Australia and yes, I'm horrified with the state of child health care here in America. And its a shame that I use to complain heaps while I'm in Australia, now I'm pretty much speechless.
Australia all the way! |

Aus by far is better. Am US and am tired of our healthcare system. I agree with MattF. |
