And the biased answers reign : )
I'm a Queenslander but I can't say I'm much of a fan of Brisbane. Only because I'm a country girl at heart and I find all that concrete ugly. Melbourne I haven't been to, but it's famous for it's shopping.
If it's a true village atmosphere you want though, I'd suggest heading north of Brisbane. Noosa is really beautiful and has all the modcons going for it. This area is booming right now, so budget wise might not be so great. I've lived in Bundaberg and that's a fairly good area.
Most importantly, if you're going to become an honorary Queenslander, please be sure that you can handle humidity. I've lost track of the number of people who've moved inter-state only to move back because they couldn't handle it. Living on the coast helps a lot with that though, as sea breezes in Bundaberg always made for a much milder time.
What it really comes down to is your situation. Do you have a family? Are you retiring? What precisely do you mean by 'village'? What kind of weather were you wanting/could you handle? Answer these questions and others and you'll get a much more in-depth and relevant response from us. Good luck! |

Brisbane is a lot more laid back to go with the beachy type surrounds. Melbourne is a bit more upmarket. Neither place is a village but a major city so you will need to look further afield if you want a village type atmosphere. There are plenty of places nearby the cities if you are prepared to travel a bit.
Naturally Brisbane has the warmer weather but can be murderously hot in summer but beautiful in winter. Melbourne is hell in winter ok in summer but also has horrid heat...you can't really escape the heat in Aust unless you head for Hobart.
Affordability is another thing to look at. Brisbane is slightly cheaper than Melbourne but is on the rise. Adelaide is worth looking at if it is a village atmosphere you are looking for but is very quiet compared to Bris and Melb.
Good luck. You can't go wrong coming to this beautiful country. |

I have lived in Melbourne for 20 year and visited Brisbane on numerous occasions but never felt like settling there,Melbourne has everything you need good family entertainment along with great night life.It has some of the best sporting facilities in the world. The people are friendly and help full.
You can chose to live in the actually city or 20 mins out you feel as though you are in the middle of the country side.Within 3 hours wherever you live in Melbourne you can be in the Bush,on the Beach or even Skying either on the water or the snow.I wont say Brissie is not a live able city but i really think Melbourne is the best.We emigrated here 20 years ago and have never looked back, make the move you won't regret it. |

G'day,
I'm an immigrant who's been living in Melbourne for over 16yrs and still love it very much.
However the answerer before me are right. Melbourne & Brisbane are not village type. It is big cities with it's own traffic congestions during peak-hours, nitelife and others associated with big city lifestyle.
Therefore you have to define yourself what sort of village type you are looking for? Fresh air? Quietness? No traffic? Farm type? Some areas in Melbourne, just by driving abt 30min away from the CBD is already country-style lifestyle with big lands.
Maybe come to Australia for 2weeks and spend some time in Brisbane and Melbourne to explore the area to get some ideas on what you are going to face when you eventually arrive in Australia and which area you are interested to settle in.
Hope you'll find what you're looking for. Good luck and welcome to Australia :) |

They are both beautiful cities.
I've lived in both and they both have their own charm but they are completely different in every way.
I wouldn't describe either as having a village atmosphere.
If you're looking for a village type place maybe you should be looking outside a Capital City. |

Viva Brisvegas.
Brisbane has mucher nicer people, a warmer climate, the current premiers the Brisbane Broncos and a nice relaxed lifestyle.
It's not as snobby and stodgy as Melbourne, so Brisbane is the winner |
|

But Why??
|
They are both great, different climates. 2000km apart.... |
