Westpac or Challenge bank is a reasonable Australian bank, but hunt around for the best accounts. Good luck and enjoy Australia.

commonwealth bank they are everyplace every post-office is a branch so access is always ezy lot of ATM's as well

There are heaps of banks in Australia but only 4 major banks which I would recommend being -

1) The Commonwealth Bank
2) National Bank
3) Westpac
4) ANZ

These 4 banks operate EVERYWHERE and you will have no problems finding a branch, agency, or ATM wherever you travel in Australia.

MOST DEFINATLEY the common wealth bank !!!!!!!

they are the most readily available bank all around Austrailia. in all the major towns and cities, its also good if you are planning on working there!

NOT COMMONWEALTH BANK!!! whatever you do do not open an account with them, they are scammers and you will lose money and you wont know where its gone. WAW Credit Union isn't too bad, Bendigo Bank, Westpac (morally the best) really it depends on what deals apply to you, some banks offer low interest, no account keeping fees etc. Go into each bank before you open up an account have a "sit-down" (haha) and tell them that you are from overseas and looking to open an account here in Oz, tell them you are looking at other banks, if you mention low interest rates the bank will usually try to beat them, basically haggle them until you get what you want.
