If you want to live somewhere that is like America, then I suggest going to America.
Both Australia and New Zealand are unique to themselves, and both are beautiful. If you are a seasoned traveller then pehaps you can visit both countries before you make up your mind. If you are very attuned to American lifestyle then you might not like either country.
Australia is a much more arid country that NZ, which is greener as it gets a higher rainfall. Australia is much, much bigger than NZ. Both have areas of great beauty, beaches, rainforests, mountains and lakes, freezing cold, boiling hot, snow, drought etc, etc....
It just depends on where in those countries you go.
It's interesting to note though that the largest intake through immigration into Australia to live, comes from New Zealand. |

If you do not want a cold winter, go to Queensland Australia. The east coast of Queensland would never get as cold as Canada in winter. I live mid coast east Queensland and it is the middle of winter. Today we got really cold, it dropped to 12 degrees centigrade, but at least we got up to 19 degrees. That was a really cold day for us. |

neither is similar to America. New Zealand is lovely but very cold. Australia you can have anything from warm-hot all year round (top end) to hot in summer, cold in winter (Melbourne Tasmania) In Melbourne to get snow you will have to drive a couple of hours so it will not snow in the suburbs. As I am Australian I of course say Australia. |

I live in Australia and I think New Zealand is more beautiful because it has "real" mountains (ours are not high) it also has lots of fantastic scenery.Milford sound would be hard to beat with anything in the world. You won't find many Australians who will tell you this though because they are so patriotic they can't bear to think anywhere else is better than Aus (in any way!)
Having said that though, Australia is beautiful in many places, in it's own way. It has lots of forests and good beaches (If you keep away from Queensland beaches which are very crowded) It is also more modern than New Zealand with good shops everywhere and large supermarket chains and big
shopping malls. I think if you lived in a big city you would fit in
OK in either country, but especially in Australia.
One of the good things about coming "down under" is that you can visit the "unchosen" country and decide if you'd rather be there than in the one you chose - and migrate to it! Lots of New Zealanders live in Australia, I guess it's probably the same for Aussies in NZ. Aussie is quite like America in it's lifestyle and attitudes.
NZ is not cold all the time. Of course the glaciers are! There are ski resorts in the south island, the north island has the hot springs and boiling mud. South Island is more beautiful in my opinion. The bungee jumping and whitewater rafting etc are good too! |

Well I am an American living permanently in NZ and I have to say I have no idea where all these people are getting the idea that NZ is a cold place to live. Auckland, which has about one-third of the country's population has an average temp. of 57F in the middle of winter and 75F in summer, it never freezes and has snowed only once in recorded history, back in 1939. Coming from Boston love being able to wear shorts all year round here. Parts of Aussie are just as cold in the winter as Auckland is, but yes they get a good deal hotter in the summer.
As to beauty, NZ wins hands down. NZ is a far greener, younger country with extreme changes in scenery and climate in a much smaller and thus easier to see area than in Australia. There are plenty of mountains to go skiing on and beautiful beaches of white silica sand, golden sand and volcanic black sand all within an hour or two of Auckland. The North and South Islands are like different countries themselves. South Island is incredibly beautiful but it is much colder, though nothing compared to Canada. The other wonderful thing about NZ's beauty is that you can actually see it without fearing for your life. There are no poisonous spiders here, no snakes, no predators, you can walk through the many rainforests and feel perfectly safe.
Now as to expense of living, NZ is more expensive than the US, but less expensive than Aussie by a good deal. Taxes and fees are much higher in Australia and housing is more expensive. Salaries are also a good deal higher in Aus. and not too many people move to NZ for the pay.
Now which is more like the US? Definately Australia. When I visited there I felt like I was back in the US, the Sydney museum has a section titled "The American Dream" about how architects who built much of Sydney were US-trained and built the suburbs on the American model. Queensland is "The Sunshine State" just like Florida and it has theme parks, trailer parks and even a part of Gold Coast called Miami Beach.
I would describe New Zealand as Californian and Hawaiian landscapes meet Vermont countryside without the traffic, overcrowding or fast-paced American lifestyle. Kiwis have a very distinctive laid-back way of life, as evidenced by teachers who wear shorts to work and people, kids teens and adults, who regularly walk around the supermarket or mall barefoot.
There are plenty of drawbacks to living in NZ, lot of rain in winter (more than Seattle), slow internet, crazy drivers, lack of central heat or insulation in houses. But at the end of the day I'd still take it over Oz. Many Kiwis who go to Australia to earn money in their 20s come back to raise their kids in NZ because they consider it a safer, slower-paced place to have a family. |

Australia is awesome and so is NZ. NZ itself is supercold to leave in. Super Expensive as well. Though it is one of the most lovish part of the world. But you get that similar climax and enviroment in Canada right?
Australia is a massive island. It is made up of 7 beautiful states . eash are different and wondefully amazing. Afordable, and where you choose to live, you can always visit other states. but i guess a good research on both countries and its states will give you an idea of where you want to settle ... good luck! |

I live in Aus, been to NZ both are beautiful in their own right. It's the cost of living that you need to look at, you will be paid more to work in Aus, but things are more expensive here, you will get paid a little lower in NZ but housing is much cheaper.
If you live in one you can visit the other quite cheaply return flight between Aus east coast and NZ only take about 3 - 4 hours depending were you land and at present about $350/return.

Australia because it has more variety the only thing New Zealand beats Oz is its got huge mountains with lots of snow and has beautiful glaciers but over time you get bored once you see the same old things all the time, That is why Australia wins hands down is because its a vast Country with different landscaped to suit different peoples taste. Oh and yes it does snow in Australia and no we are not all desert and wasteland. |

Two very different countries. New Zealand is much much smaller, with a laid back way of life, very loyal sporting culture. There are larger houses and alot of open space. Some gang violence in some areas but generally quite safe, a bit of a drug problem with pee (I am not sure if thats how you spell it but you say it like that). Very green, coldish (esp south island very cold), lovely walks and countryside.
Australia is warmer and more cosmopolitan. Generally safe, less gang violence but your average suburb is not quite as safe (although still good). More baron land, although there is some greenery. Outdoors culture of beer and bbq's.
Both places are very friendly and you will not dislike either. Simple quiet life NZ. Simple less quiet life Australia. |
