I'd say soccer or football is rapidly increasing in popularity

tentofield
As far as participation is concerned, fishing, netball and golf are the most popular. Taking in both participation and watching, Australian football is way out in front. In participation, soccer is second followed by the two rugby codes but both rugby codes are more popular than soccer for watching. Nationally, Rugby Union is more popular than League but League dominates in Queensland and the northern half of NSW. In summer, cricket is the sport to watch and some people like tennis. Most people enjoy the beach and swimming.

In Melbourne, if it is on at the MCG, it will get a good crowd no matter what it is. World tiddly-winks championship? No problems, full house guaranteed :o)
