Brisbane: Barely goes over 35. Though, winters aren't that cool.
Melbourne: It does go over 35, but quite rarely. The weather is moderated by the ocean, and Melbourne is quite cold in the winter (it can also get cold in summer some days).
Adelaide: It's mostly around early 30s in summer.
Perth: Even though the highest record was 46 degrees, but in the summer, mostly, it barely reaches 37.
Sydney: Speaking for its western suburbs, every summer, the weather reaches 40. Though downtown Sydney is mostly around 35.
So the hottest city is Perth. But if you count Sydney's western suburbs, then Sydney is. |

Perth is definately the hottest, it's hot in winter let alone summer, brisbane is hot and humid, Sydney and Melbourne are fairly similar
Melbourne's probably abit cooler |

It would definitely be Perth, but Melbourne and Adelaide can turn on some scorchers too, though not for as many days on end as they get in Perth.
Of the cities you've listed, Brisbane has far fewer really hot days, but its overall hot weather lasts a fair bit longer than the others.
I've included links to the official Perth, Brisbane and Ipswich statistical weather sites. Similar stats are available from http://www.bom.gov.au/weather/ for every city and large town in Australia. Select the state from the list on the right, then Climate Averages, then the specific location.
The person who said that near Brisbane, temperatures of 45 and 50 degrees are common, is very mistaken. The highest temperature ever recorded in Brisbane was 43.2 on Australia Day, 1940 and Ipswich's highest was 44.6 on Boxing Day, 1972. Nowhere anywhere near Brisbane has higher temperatures than Ipswich. |

Here in Adelaide last year we had 13 days in a row over 100F in March when it was supposed to be autumn so I think we're pretty hot stuff. |

either Brisbane or Perth, I've been told Perth is a rather warm place, although I've yet to travel there and i can tell you from experience that Brisbane can be quite hot, it frequently reaches 45-50C in the summer in my local area which is slightly south of Brisbane itself |

Brisbane is the worst city it is the hottest and has the worst infrastructure so if you are travelling around the city chances are you will get stuck in a traffic jam and if your air cons not working you will fry to death even on their trains :( |

Definitely Perth.
Perth's Mediterranean climate makes for scorching hot summer days.
Its not unusual for the temps to hit the high 30C's and into the century mark. I remember one trip home from Sydney to the tropical north west of Western Australia. Sydney was cold and miserable (odd for summer) arrived in Perth to a sweltering 45C heatwave. Got to Karratha and thought the 35C average for that area in summer to be quite nice after that. |

Here in the bush, 35 is a mild summers day, lol. It got to 48 here a couple of years ago and it was humid too. lol. Orrible. |

Perth.
But, most of Australia has hot summers. I live in VIC and in my area, it isn't a hot day unless it is over 38C. |

Adelaide is very hot in the summer & South Australia is the driest state in the country.
Perth is just as hot, and Darwin might be the hottest because of the humidity & tropical climate (its just south of East Timor & Indonesia)... |
