While Holidaying in NZ, can I use my mobile phone? If not, how can I?

Any charges? How do I do it?

go into your mobile phone shop (telstra, optus or whoever you are with) and get them to set it up on your phone and let you know what charges there are. I know that text messsaging can be a little more expensive and also you have to set it up so that incoming calls are not billed to you. When a friend of mine was in New Zealand everytime her parents rang it automatically billed the cost of the call to her and not her parents and she ended up with a $400 phone bill.

depending on where you are coming from, if you are in Australia, the type of phone you have wont matter, if you are elsewhere in the world, you will need to make sure you have a tri-band phone, this will work in all countries.
you will then need to contact you phone carrier and gat them to activate International Roming. this will allow you to pick up the network that is the strongest wherever you are.
the cost of nternational roming varies, you will have to pay for the cost of the call or SMS plus your carrier will charge you your standard call rate on top. basically you are paying double the cost. you also get charged for incoming calls.

i have taken my phone to USA, Germany and New Zealand, and i soon learned to use it sparringly. ie only in emergencies or SMS to fill the family in.

Other option is to purchase a pre-paid sim start up when you arrive in New Zealand, that will be cheeper. but you will have a different phone number to notify your family and friends about.

using International roming allows you to maintain your own number while you are there.

it will cost a lot more because it will be international. your phone company can tell you how much

New Zealand has just come to grips with post(zip)codes. Mobile phones are at least a decade away.

Try ringing your phone company. They will know.

Yes ...international roaming and they bend you over for it! But you sound like a phone junky ,so you will have to suffer!

I'm from Australia, and when I went to Fiji last year I got Global Roaming put on my phone. It cost me more to send txt msgs and cost more to make calls and even to receive calls. It was worth it tho, incase something went wrong. Talk to your mobile phone service provider..

Enjoy your holiday!

nope, they don't have mobile phone towers in New Zealand yet. They still communicate via sheep mail (like pidgeon mail but with sheep 'cause there are lots over there).

Of course you can use your mobile phone in NZ. Set up global roaming with your phone company before you leave or buy a sim card when you get there.

If it is unlock it would be cheaper to buy a NZ sim card, i.e vodafone.
