Being from Northern England you probably spend many days indoors because of the cold & rain so just do the same on our hot days with the airconditioner on instead of the heater. We had four days of 40 over new years but then we didn't have any really hot ones till last week when we had another 4 days of +36C and now its back down to the mid 20's for at least the next few days.
You'll find that our heat is a clear heat unlike the northern parts of Australia were it is hot and humid for about 6 months of the year.We also have some sort of winter down here which you'll probably enjoy.
I don't know the terms of your emigration regarding where you have to reside but once you've been here for a while and if the heat really worries you then perhaps look at living somewhere like the Victor Harbor/Goolwa area which is about an hour drive south of Adelaide. It has a lot milder climate and you tend to miss most of the hot days down there.
A friends parents who also emigrated from the old dart always spend summer down there in a caravan.
So over a typical summer in Adelaide you may get about 12-14 days of +36C temperatures but just chill out as they say and as long as you're mainly working indoors there shouldn't be much of a problem |

Adelaide is quite beautiful. I came from the Midlands, and lived in Adelaide for 20 years, (now retired a bit out on the coast). Houses do have airconditioning you know, just like you have double glazing to keep out the cold! These extreme temperatures dont go on forever, maybe a week, and thats only of course in the summer months,. then we get the welcome 'cool change'The beautiful beaches are all easily accessible from most parts of Adelaide. Over the last weekend, Adelaide had around 38 degrees for 4 days, today, they have 24 - perfect. I welcome you to Adelaide, you will love it , there are the hills, the vineyards, and the ocean. Make up your mind to enjoy it and you will. Harbor thoughts of dear ole England and you might as well not come. THIS IS THE LIFE! |

of course you will adapt at the moment very pleasant 21 C it is still summer and I will need an extra blanket. My parents never complained as they worked continuously usually holding more than one job and I do so too so good luck and don't worry as there are lots of opportunities--- my son has already debt free as he has worked in the mines hard work but phenomenal wages.! |

Well they have been adapting to life here for over 200 years, So I cant see why you would be any different, BUT!! All your POMS are thought of as whingers anyway, lol.... Yes it gets HOT, but at least it isnt gret , wet and freezing like England, Adelaide is fairly good all year round, we get some days in the 40degrees during summer but mostley they are around 34 ish, its different every year, one year we had 42degrees for two weeks in a row, that was tough, but this year its been fairly mild, dry and hot but not too bad. C'mon toughen up mate, you could be workn with me out of Moomba at the gasfields where it reaches 53 in the sun, thats hot....Cheers |

I have lived in Adelaide for most of my life and the heat isn't as radical as some would have you believe...Yes it does get real hot some days but thats why we have air conditioning.....and the beaches are some of the best in the world...especially down in the southern areas....
and I dont know where the idea is from that we dont walk anywhere that is not true a lot of people walk everywhere....myself included as I dont have a car......I think you will be fine here ..its a great place to live..... |

we went to adeliade last year to visit my old uk friend, one day weather was 40 degrees and the next 22!!! she lives in the barossa valley (wine region) it is great - how England was 30 years ago - their winters however are cold (ok about 15!!!) so although you will need air con in the summer you will need cold clothes in the winter! it is great - you will love it -one word though the clothes shops are dated!!! also check the areas around Adeliade really well as there are a few big estates that are not great and have a lot of crime ( petty burgaly nothing too major - but not the best of estates) good luck |

People are suggesting Adelaide but thats probably a bad idea. Adelaide has a climate like the Mediterranean. It gets incredibly hot during summer.
A better place is Hobart. In the summer we don't get hotter than 30 more than once or twice, and in winter it is never usually less than 10. The temperature in summer is hot enough to enjoy but not so hot that its bad. There is about 250 000 people so its pretty small but housing is cheap. |

When l watched england play cricket there a few years ago,it was 47c for several days, and everybody stayed indoors the streets were deserted. But you could have chosen many worse places (and they do play cricket there) |

I have lived in Adelaide all my life.
My family moved here from Yorkshire in 1966.
You will adapt, yes it does get hot here, but you will cope, it would be just as hard for me to cope if I moved to a colder place like England. I don't think the heat will be as bad as you imagine, we have a very dry heat here which is much more pleasant to cope with than the smothering humidity of Northern Australia.
My family have never looked back, they have been here for over 40 years and certainly don't miss the cold. Don't forget, the 40+ deg celcius days are only during summer and rarely last for more than a week at a time, If I could give you 1 piece of advice, don't try and cope without air conditioning. Even the hardest of Aussies love their comforts, just like you would love your heating in the winter. :))
I hope you give it a go here, some people come and get put off instantly, give it a while, I hope you learn to love it here.
P.S. Our employment opportunities here are at an all time high. Good Luck!! |

The temperature in Adelaide only reaches temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius about 2-3 days a year. Almost all houses have air conditioning and all shopping malls and cinemas have air conditioning. Most cars these days also have air conditioning. you get used to the hot weather after a while just like you would be used to cold wet weather. I'm sure if someone from Adelaide moved to the north of England they would complain about the cold and rain. |

I am English and I lioved there for a year two years ago. My husband is from there. I won't lie...I could not deal with the heat...it was for me the main factor in not settling there apart from misisng my family.
I had a new baby though..which made me anxious about her....I found that noone walks anywhere,,,everyone drives and although the beaches are beautiful they are too hot to sit on as there are no palm trees or other shade.
Some days I just lay in the living room with the curtains shut....I couldnt wait to get home. |

Don't do it. It is a desert town. Get out before the summer or live close to the water. |
