HSBC have facilities worldwide - ex ozzie - living in the UK
That doesn't mean though that they don't have other banks available over there too.......best idea is to get on the website of any banks you know and see where they have offices worldwide. They normally have a tab available. They often state "with 400 branches worldwide" or "reciprocal banking available in Australia''. Just do a bit of homework or call them!!! Enjoy yourself! It's a great place for holidays!!! |

my mate from germany used westpac, but i think if you have a maestro card you can get money out of the majority of atm's.
what country are you coming from?? we use credit cards alot here, even for purchases of 5 dollars. (even though people get annoyed with you) so you could just load it up before coming over. mastercard and visa are the most accepted. american express and diners club are hit and miss.

You don't have to have a bank account in Australia. You can withdraw money from your own bank via any ATM (automated telling machines) in Australia if your card is setup for CIRRUS or MAESTRO. I can go anywhere in the world and withdraw money from my own account.
Just go to your local bank and enquire if they support either CIRRUS or MAESTRO. |

Commonwealth Bank traditionally has the largest number of outlets.
However, these days there are so many agreements in place between banks and banking networks worldwide that most ATMs in Australia will dispense cash from any other bank (albeit for an extra fee charged by your bank). And those on the Maestro/Cirrus networks (most of them) will dispense cash against cards issued throughout most of the world.
The best place to start is to ask your existing bank what kind of access to your funds you can expect to have throughout Australia. If the answer is satisfactory, I would not change anything.
It has been probably more than 10 years since I last bothered to make any other money arrangements for travel beyond taking my normal bank ATM cards and credit cards. |
