Why Australian government selected canberra as an capital instead of sydney?

Matt M
Canberra was selected as the location of the nation's capital in 1908 as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne. It is unusual among Australian cities as an entirely purpose-built, planned city. Following an international contest for the city's design, a design by Chicago architect Walter Burley Griffin was selected and construction commenced in 1913

NSW & Victoria both wanted the capital to be in their state. As a result a new state, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) was established with Canberra as it's capital.

Melbourne was originally the capital of Aus. Canberra was built specifically to avoid the political fallout of choosing either Melbourne or Sydney as a permanent capital. It's the world's only purpose built national city.

it was a competition that was staged by the government of the time and canberra was the city that won.

I couldn't be 100% certain, but I think it was actually a fight between Melbourne and Sydney and it wasn't fair to 'award' the Capital to either, so another city, Canberra was established and based geographically between Melbourne and Sydney.

canberra is better than sydney in many aspects

Sydney did not wont to listen to the lies coming from Canberra

Canberra was selected as the location of the nation's capital in 1908 as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne.
The city is located at the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory, 300 kilometres (190 mi) southwest of Sydney, and 650 kilometres (400 mi) north-east of Melbourne.

Good question........

There are many countries, who choose their capitals different from what we expect....

The main criteria for choosing a capital, is its historical importance....

Mostly places where the royal families used to live, or places where, crucial battles were fought and won, are selected as capitals....

Also famous cities are choosen...

But after a capital is chosen, some other cities may become rich and famous....
And moving capitals is not easy, because it is hard to move all the administrative buildings that are there in the capital city...

Just for your information, some countries choose their capitals as cities that are less important, deliberately, because they want to carry out administrative processes, far from places exposed to tourists and are widely open to general public.......

Hope you got your answer...........
