Australia is colloquially known as the Land Down Under.
The term probably stems from the 80's song by Men at Work and became popular during the 1983 successful America's Cup campaign of John Bertrand on board the yacht Australia II.

Australians do not refer to Australia as "down under". We are not "down under" anyone thank you. (And neither is Brazil). All the maps are upside down.

Australia started as a British colony and was referred to jocularly as the Land Down Under as long ago as the 19th century. It referred to Australia's position on the globe compared with that of Britain. The song by Men at Work just used an expression that had been around for more than 100 years.
