cause they're big. great doesn't just mean good, it can also be a synonym for big, huge etc.
the great dividing range runs almost all the way up one side of the continent and the great barrier reef is the larges living organism in the world. |

It's because they're really really big, have you seen the size of the Great Australian Bight, or the Great Barrier Reef, also by the time the bored English explorers sailed around the outside 200 odd years ago, it appears they may have run out of ideas. IE. New South Wales, Victoria, all after the sovereign of the day and royal relatives no doubt, God Save the Queen/King and all that. |

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef and single living object on the planet.
The Great Dividing Range is the mountain range that runs from Victoria all the way up through NSW and Queensland, seperating the temperate coastal regions from the harsh and barren interior country. It's roughly as long as the distance between Scotland and southern Italy.
So the reason a few places are called 'great' is because they are great in size. |

it could be cause we are so great.. but its actually to do with the size australia is a continent and im pretty sure the land mass could be even bigger than the US. It's huge and therefore the landmarks tend to be on the large scale |
