All decent Australians were horrified at the images of the man beating the kangaroo to death. If he's caught (and our authorities are VERY anxious to catch him), he will be in major trouble for animal cruelty. Don't confuse what that lowlife did with our efforts to keep kangaroo numbers under control.
Kangaroos are not killed legally for sport, but several million are shot under permit every year by licensed professional shooters in an essential government controlled cull. The number of permits (tags) issued varies from year to year and depends on the number of roos in a given locality. Because kangaroos are so well adapted to conditions in Australia, their numbers can explode after a single good season and if If the cull didn't take place, we would be completely overrun making it virtually impossible to raise crops or livestock over huge areas of the country. If a good season is followed by a less good one and numbers are not decreased by permitted culling, millions more of the animals die of starvation and disease caused by lack of food. Don't for a moment imagine that they're in any way endangered!
Most of the culled animals are used for pet food and some are destined for the table in Australia and overseas. |

Yes, kangaroos are shot here. It's the same as native animals being shot in any other country.
Please don't believe that all of us are vicious idiots like that cruel young man on the news. When he's caught he will certainly be convicted of animal cruelty.
Australians were appalled by that video as much as anyone else.
It's just a shame that the roo didn't rip his gut open as they can do, using his long claws on his back feet. |

OH IT'S DAYS LIKE THESE
|
actually, you are mistaken.
the man beating the kangaroo to death was a single incident. this is not a regular occurrence in australia, and i should know, I LIVE THERE.
indigenous australians traditionally hunted kangaroos for food and survival. NOT FOR SPORT.
although some restaurants serve kangaroo meat, this is justified because kangaroos are not an endangered species. it is much the same as people killing cows, pigs or sheep to eat. |

culling roos is a way of life for farmers in Australia they devestate crops eating the new shoots as soon as they show. When a farmers livlyhood depends on his crops or grass and feed for his cattle the roos have to go. An yes some people eat roo meat or use it for dog food it is sold in some supermarkets in the meat dept. |

Yes. They eat kangaroo like we eat deer here. You can buy kangaroo here in the states if you would like to try it. My daughter ate kangaroo while she was down under last summer. She said it was very good. |

Well the guy beating the kangaroo up did commit a serious cruelty to an animal.Kangaroos are actually killed each year for meat and the tail is considered the nicest part.It tastes a lot like beef.A lot of people buy it and like to eat kangaroo meat.It also gets imported to different countries. The kangaroo skin gets sold in souvenir shops. |

Although I'm slightly against it, alot of kangaroos are shot because they are a danger to farmers crops. There is something like 200 million kangaroos in Australia, so it's simply to make sure they don't become a pest. I hope that they don't get mistreated in doing so though. |

well i know they make it into cat food, we've been feeding my cat kangaroo meat for the past 5 years, I'm being serious - as jokingly as It may sound, I'm not sure what other purposes the meat serves but I'm sure it isn't purely for domesticated cats who have a sweet tooth for the native.
I'm not entirely certain on the EXACT reason for the cullings, but apparently they shot dozens of them months back because they were growing to "plague sizes" in defence force areas or something like that, there was a big protest there too. |
