Why aren't Tasmanian Devils in the pet trade?

In May 2008, The Tasmanian devil’s status was formally upgraded to ‘endangered’ under Tasmania’s Threatened Species Protection Act 1995.

The expert Threatened Species Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) completed its five-year review of species listed in the Act's schedules, and recommended that the Tasmanian devil be moved 'up the list' because of its increasing vulnerability.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has included the Tasmanian devil under the Commonwealth’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. They are wholly protected.

Devil Disease: A devastating disease is sweeping through Tasmania's devil population, killing more than 90% of adults in high density areas and 40-50% in medium-low density areas.

Australian native animals are protected species and not available as pets. Most have quite specific food and space requirements which would be difficult for most households to meet.

Apart from this, Tassie Devils are feisty little creatures who spit and bite just about everything. Can't see them fitting into a suburban home, unless you want it trashed.

Just Wondering

Tasmanian devils are wild creatures and not suitable to be locked in cages for the 'pleasure' of people.

It would be very doubtful they could be tamed to the point where they would enjoy being a pet, and they would bite and scratch anyone who came near them in the meantime.

because they are a wild creature, no wild creatures should ever be kept as pets. they deserve their freedom.

They are also a protected species, as are a lot of our native animals.

rustupd
Tasmanian Devils are too stupid to run a Business & they would eat all the other animals

Future Eagles Mummy!!
Apart from the fact that you cannot keep native animals as pets THEY WILL BITE YOU. BADLY. A LOT.

Despite their cute, cuddly appearance, they can rip your arm clean off ...

Because when a friend did work experience at an animal place and was given the job of feeding the Tassie Devils she ended up getting covered in scratches and had to get a tetanus shot!

fruitsalad
Because they are incredibly stupid (but I guess so are goldfish) and really brutal and messy. Would you want a pet covered in gore?
