I am an Aussie, living abroad.. and i take great offence to what you are saying. Americans talk up their country all the time ''were the freest country with the most right etc etc'' right..

Australians are a unique bunch of people, think of the land size and there is only 20 million of us.

Our country holds some of the most unique wildlife species in the world, our landscape is something no one who hasnt visited would understand.

Australians are so proud, we are one of the greatest sporting nations on earth, we have an international influence on the world and its markets. We have fought in wars along side nations like america and britian, with little recoginition on the world stage.

But we are a country, really only 106 years old, and my gosh am i proud to be an aussie..

to be an aussie isnt just a nationality, its who i am and its a lifestyle..

Even a person from Rwanda and Ethiopia is allowed to take pride in their country. It's none of your business. I am no Australian but I support their right to take pride in their country without being criticized for it.

Possibly the reason the Australians you've met were annoying and rude is because of the person you are.

America is a superpower because of countries like Australia that back them in every god damn war they start!

If you think all Australia has is Steve Erwin and a reef you are very ignorant and uneducated.
Australia is leading many medical procedures and research,a fair health system for ALL,oh by the way did you know japan imports most of their rice from Australia?
Do some research before insulting people,unlike American Australians are liked all over the world. And take a long hard look at your country,good and bad in all countries.

We Aussies KNOW that our country is great! America is not the "superpower" that it claims to be. Yes, you have Microsoft that keeps selling defective software, Walmart that condones child labour, slave labour and human rights abuses by buying cheap, shoddy crap from China to be sold by underpaid staff in their stores, McDonalds and their crap masquerading as food, the NRA idiots who oppose gun control, the Dept. of Homeland (In)Security, Halliburton scamming millions of tax payers dollars supplying sub standard stuff to the armed forces in the Middle East and charging exorbitant prices, the disgrace of Guantanamo Bay, etc., etc., and finally the biggest claim to infamy of all - a George Bush led circus as a government!

Yes, we are proud of our country, but definetely not arrogant! We accomplish things quietly, no flag waving, no parades or brass bands, we just get on with the job.

We got lots of things to be proud of. But because we don't go around bragging about it or flaunt it, (like all these other countries especially the USA) not too many people know - which seems to be true in your case - making statements like "But what has australia contributed to the world. I know they have a coral reef but what is so great about it? and besides steve Irwin, what else have they contributed "

If you truly do you research first - you will find that Australia has contributed so much ot the world.

A lot of people are alive today because of our contribution to the world of medicine. We have resources that the whole needs and is buying from us by the gazillion tons. We have a society that is very tolerant. It is not tangible like - as you put it - "microsoft, wallmart, mcdonalds, IBM, HP, Cadillacs.." but to be able to live peacefully and in a safe neighbourhood - what price do you pay for that?

Look past material things. Australia is a fantastic place to live. We don't have to be arrogant and rude. We KNOW our country is great. IF it isn't, why so many people want to come and see it?

I would suggest a holiday to Australia and find out. It is lovely and friendly. It is clean and safe (most of the time....), the countryside is breathtaking.

Australia hasn't spawned a lot of multinationals but really, if that is your only measure of a country's value.....then I question yours.

I'm an Australian and I am saying there are good and bad in all cultures. I think you are generalizing a bit. I could go through a whole list of Australian achievements, but I guess you might need to listen first and I don't think you are prepared for that. I guess you just met the wrong Aussies. It's nice to be proud of your country, and it is a beautiful place full of people from every part of the world, whom on the whole have been made to feel at home and have adopted Australia as their home. I guess if I were from America or Japan I would feel the same about my country. You are obviously ignorant if all you can say is that we have a coral reef and Steve Irwin. That would be like saying all England has is A Queen who wears a Crown. Be nice we are not all that bad..

Australians have just as much right as any other person to be arrogant about the greatness home country. You, actually, just proved this. Americans can go around saying "my country is a superpower and we have all these things so its the best ever" and nobody questions it. The measure of a country is not by what they have contributed to it. There is no way to condemn what this person did without also condemning what thousands of Americans do when they go to foreign countries and act as proselytizers of American thought.

I will tell you what I think is great about AU .. the fact that we have never had a civil war ..that we have risen from our convict background.. that we have a reasonably decent public health system .. that we have a socialistic heart, by that I mean we will not see our fellow countrymen suffer if we can help it .. infact we do what we can to help who we can ..

Now I am NOT arrogant about being an aussie ..I consider myself lucky to be an aussie .. but when somebody gives McDonalds and Walmart and Cadillacs as examples as to why THEY have reason to be proud .. PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFTTTTTTTTTT get over yourself ..

Well, without a doubt, Australia is the best country in the world. Yes, it's true we may not have invented mcdonalds or design toyotas but we still import all these things. We have a high amount of community spirit, a low amount of gun violence(although not recently) and strong values as a nation. Japan is too overpopulated and the problem with America is that it's full of Americans.

Australia is so great because it's a country made of people with ambition that no-one thought anyone could do anything with except as a penal colony. We proved the rest of teh world wrong - that is why it's such a great country because it instills that no matter what anyone else says if you reckon it's possible - it is.
To add on a scientific aspect, Aboriginals are the oldest, still living, culture of the homosapien species. If that's not something remarkable I don't know what is.

And you quote "but those are the only two recognisable australian things this world knows" - are you honestly so closeminded that you've never heard of ANYTHING else? So Uluru is definately a make believe place then... kangaroos, nup, mustn't exist - koalas and platypus too.

our location (and size of land) in war matters AND

We've got the largest natural deposit of uranium by far than any other country in the world... we also have oil feilds in central parts and a huge reason there were many immigrants back in the day was because of the gold rush. We also have some of the purest copper, zinc, lead and other minerals derived out of the ground in the world!

Australia isn't a superpower because of our shitty political past like robert menzies who was devout to Britian, and still believed that it was our 'mother country' - when he was Prime Minister in yr 1966. Then also our small population and recent political blows like Johnny Howard running right up the **** of George Bush (he is the biggest joke in Australia)... I mean america better get their hands on that oil in iraq or there will be an irreplaceable debt to cover.

Hey did you know General Motors originated in Aussie through holden vehicles??? (i've been lead to believe, not 100% sure tho)
