Why do aussies call us brits 'pommies'?

It peeves me off because we do kinda speak the same anyway!

In the early convict days the convicts title was
Prisoner Of Her Majesty
POHM
Typically Aussie's shortened that to
POM
Don't stress Aussie's calling British pommies is a sign of affection

Big Cox
A group of 'poms' here in Perth, I forget the name the group went under, took court action in an attempt to have the term 'pom' deemed a racist remark.

It cost them an arm & a leg in court fees as they went through all the courts - finally to the High Court in Canberra. All the lesser courts had decreed that the word' pom' was not racist. The High Court upheld the lower courts decisions - so officially the word 'pom' is NOT racist.

The daily newspaper & commercial TV stations followed the action through. The complainants were really peed off that the court judgement went against them - as it had cost them so much & they were hoping to have costs awarded to them had they won their action.

We call you pommies because that is what you are called. It is like asking why do you call a monkey a monkey.

By the way, when you call us convicts we think you are stupid.

It's a term of endearment, there's lots worse we could call you, but we don't. Except during the cricket season.

Its the way we are we call redheads Bluey,NZ's Kiwi's we like to give people nicknames and it really is a term of endearment just be happy you aren't American we call them septic tanks but all in good humour.
You can insult us if you like but most of us will just laugh with you thankfully its the Aussie way not to take things to seriously.
I came over here when I was little from Britain I still get called a Pom by my friends and I would be offended if they stopped.

Campdog has given you one of several theories, nobody really knows where the name came from. Most other countries are called a kickname e.g. krauts, frogs, Eyeties, Yanks etc. It is not always friendly, but a fact of life. We are, ahem, separate countries.
