To be close to the ocean to enjoy:

Beautiful sunsets.
Cool temperatures.
Refreshing ocean breezes.
The smell of the ocean.
The sound of the ocean.
The reflection of the moon on the water.
Walking on the beach.
Camping on the beach.
Picnics on the beach.
Sunbathing by the ocean.
Surfing.
Boogieboarding.
Looking for seashells.
Clambakes.
Abundance of fresh seafood.
Deep sea fishing.
Surf fishing.
Pier fishing.
Whale watching.
SCUBA diving.
Watersports.
A place to enjoy with someone.
A place to enjoy alone.
A place for contemplation.

Just to name a few.

The ocean. It is the most awe inspiring "thing" on earth!

Well you have much of a choice in OZ as about 2/3 of the counrty is virtually uninhabitable. We have 3 of the biggests desserts around and they are in the middle area of the country so the only decent bits are around the coast line. The largest areas having a combination of reasonable water/decent land/ reasonable temp are the eastern seaboard. Of course Tassie and Adelaide come into it as well but have always been more romote form traditional trading (sailing) routes.

because you're closer to the beach, great weather, etc!

in Aussie along the coast is the best place to live as the further you go inland the dryer it is so harder to survive in comfort at a reasonable price

THE BEACH!!!!
I couldn't live without going to the beach all summer long. Pity I have to work and go to uni, so it cuts my beach time down to the weekends, but still- the beach is awesome. I heart Sydney.

Because the temperature/weather is better than inland...plus the scenery!

When life gets tough, there's nothing like heading out to sea.

Also, some of the most beautiful cities in the world are located on the coast- you've named two of them!
