Why do people live on the edge of austrlia and not the centre.?

simplegal
the centre area is too urban, too boring and because they like to live by the beach and most importantly they love the sun, sand and sea. Australia is a great surfing place, cheers

BIGMUFFIN
Too hot and no water(desert climate). Coast line is beautiful.
Sydney and Melbourne have a great cultural atmosphere.

Water

Better climate for humans

Easier to find/grow food

ALL hot countries that have coasts have higher population densities on those coasts

The majority of Australia is desert. The edges, specifically the southern edge - which is where the majority of the population lives - is much more mild because of the ocean. The northern edge is more tropical and has rain forests, marshes and swamps through out it. The center is desert.

Al
Simply because its mostly desert in the middle of Australia. Sydney has almost a quarter of the population of Australia!!!

ahsset
because the beaches are nice and the center is a dessert... and there is planty of room here so we have the freedom to choose

radiancia
Its hotter and drier in the center and more temperate on the coast.

Australia was settled by sea. Towns sprang up on the coast where water was available from rivers. All Australia's major towns and cities are on rivers on the coast.

Exploration of the centre of Australia was difficult because it is hot and dry there. Water is essential to life and the explorers had a hard time finding it. As the country was explored so the miners and the farmers moved into the new lands. Mining led to cities like Mount Isa, Tennant Creek, Broken Hill and Kalgoorlie. The Overland Telegraph and permanent water led to the development of Alice Springs.

Even with all that, there was little incentive for most people to move inland from the well established coastal cities so that is where they stayed.

The surfing is better on the edge!

Because we're a weird mob, mate! Also, the centre has this great big rock smack sitting there, as well as some other huge marbles nearby, and it's heluvajob to dig it out and moving them all. So we left them there and live at the edges instead.

Also - it's way too hot in the centre and there is no shade.

(If you don't know what I mean then you will have to do more research or ask more questions here on ANSWERS)

Cos dats where the water is, the center of Australia is dry, baron, desolate bush, not a nice place to live.

peter a
the center has the desert areas, and is quite arid and dry, and especially very hot, so its hard for anyone to live there. By the edges, theres plenty water, cool air and such.

The Great Sandy Desert comprises nearly all of interior Australia. There are few rivers and resources through the interior so there is no reason and no good way for humans to develop the area. Costal regions provide water, resources, and links to other nations.

*princess ashley*
i think it's cuz the middle of austrailia is like desert type. it's wamer and dryer than the coast

Hi,
Australia is a very flat Continent. Because we don't have high mountains in the centre of Australia like the Rockies in the USA it means there is no snow fall. If there is no snow fall you don't get rivers like the Rockies supply.

That's why not many people live in the centre. Its a balance between how much water there is to live on and the number of people who live there.

Basically that's it in a nut shell.

Location Location Location.

A majority of people like to live on the water. The climate is more stable there, and it's more convenient.
