Its architechtually different, with some features exclusive to it, and so by some it can be seen as great but most Aussies, once they've seen it, consider it to be just another building. We're not the ones raving about it. |

Your knowledge is as poor as your taste. The Opera House was designed by Jorn Utzon he is a Dane We like it bugger off. |
|

FFS what's with the names?
|
Each to their own.
Sydney may not be as beautiful as, say, Manchester or Luton, but it just keeps on ranking in the Top 10 best places to live in the world.
Go figure!
Which UK city ranks in the top ten?
Hint ... none.
Cheers :-) |

Australians are not as ignorant as you,it is quite a beautiful building considering it is sitting on the water edge it is designed to look like a ship with its sails and it succeeds.
And as to the builder, as was said it was not built by an Brit but by a Danish man. when it is lit up at night with its different lighting it is a sight to behold. oh and iam British but proud to be a naturilsed Aussie. and i think your comments are stupid you have not seen it and have probably never been out of your little town and seen any of the world |

it's very unique and sort of defines Sydney (along with the harbour bridge).
It's actually very amazing inside and it sits nicely amongst Sydney harbour. |

it wasnt designed by a brit. it makes the harbour look unique. it wouldnt be the same without the opera house. if u go to the opera house and walk around it, you will be taken in by its unusualness and uniqueness. |

First up - it was designed by a Dane not a Brit.
Second of all it is a unique (if somewhat strange) design which can be easily recognised - see that and / or the Harbour Bridge and Sydney there you are. Kinda like the Empire State Building or the Taj Mahal or the Pyramids or Big Ben. |

I agree it is not that impressive clos up as it is grey not white, but you have to admire the sheer size and design it is a one of a kind. |

I wouldn't expect a Pom to understand what I'm talking about, but when you see the Opera House under our blue skies, sitting in its magnificent position on one of the most beautiful harbours in the world - it simply looks right.
It WOULD look appalling in dreary, dirty, grey old Britain, but fortunately for all of us, it's here.
And Joern Utzon was a Dane. |

Hahahahahahahaahahahaha!
What a funny question. You are not the first to ask that as I overheard one tourist exclaiming "Is that it?"
Well curiosity got the better of you to go take a gander so it's doing it's job. I agree with you in that it's unattractive but it is unique and does add to the harbour. It's nothing much up close but from afar it looks great and is one of the things Australia is renowned for.
I like your answer Amy. :) ***EDIT*** I mean Holly!!! |

It was questioned even back in 1957, when it was designed.
One architect said that the winning design was "a piece of poetry ... magnificent".
Another architect said the design looked like "an insect with a shell on its back which has crawled out from under a leg".
Even the judges said it is clearly a controversial design!
Out of the 10 leading entries for the design, this one was the cheapest to build ! |

They are doing a good job sucking people to come to Sydney to look at the opera house. It is suppose to look like sail. Sydney is a popular harbour for sailing. Nice blue sky and full of sun which you don't get in UK.
