Why do people refer to the country of Australia as being "down under"?

It's a country above ground like every other country in the world, but I've never quite been able to figure out what it means when you ask someone, "How are things down under?" when talking to someone from Australia.

Because it's in the southern hemisphere. When you look at a globe, it's looks like it's on the "bottom" of the planet. If you ever get chance to see an Australian map, you'll see that everything has been flipped.

Because that phrase is used by people in the northern hemisphere and Australia is in the southern hemisphere.

Australia is the only country referred to that way probably because it's the biggest country in the southern hemisphere which was part of the British empire.

OK, firstly, Australia is both a continent *and* and island. Secondly, we frequently refer to ourselves as being down under, most famously in the song of that name by Men At Work.

In addition to all the other info "down under" refers to the relationship of Australia to the Equator, assuming all the globes ( some at a slight angle) and maps we see have the northern hemisphere at the top and the southern hemi is down under. Remember that Australia is a continent not an island

frank
but how do they refer to themselves?

kingbodonti
Probably because we think North is up and South is down. It's only a conventio we follow and Australia is located in the South pole.

Australia is termed "Down Under" due to it's location on the globe (when north is up). It is percieved to be at the bottom of the world. Hence "down under".
