Why do the Aussies call the new-zealander sheep shaggers and vice versa?

That's also what some of the English call the Welsh. Probably because the sheeple seem to outnumber the people. They're just yanking their chain.

red
it the same as the thing between england and wales. it's ok as the aussies say the same thing about their own in tasmania!

tusitala
If you're into rugby union and know about the tri-nations competition the new Zealanders ( All blacks ) are the " sheep shaggers ", the Australians ( Wallabies ) are the "shackle draggers " ( because of thier convict heritage ) and the South Africans ( Boers........ I think it's the proteas actually ), are the " bone tossers " .

Yeah, has to do with more sheep in NZ than people.

It's all good laugh and rivalry between Australia and NZ.

Natalie R
probably for the same reason most brits call aberdonians (people from aberdeen, scotland) sheepshaggers, they have lots of sheep!

because Aussie and kiwi's like to take the piss out of each other...think of it as brotherly love...

It's a love, hate relationship. We are the first to give each other sh*t about everything. But we would also be the first to back each other up if we needed it. I hope!.

The answer is simple. When after both of these nations were founded there were not enough women to go around. Sheep were carried on the voyages of those first settlers as a means of fresh meat on the long journey, those sheep that were not eaten were let loose and used by the unmarried settlers for many purposes.

Later different breeds of sheep were introduced to improve the stock. Many of these sheep were imported from the hills of Wales, as these suited the the conditions especially in N.Z. As you can imagine many Welsh men went there to tend the flocks. Funny you never see a Welsh Shepperd without his wellies on.

I Hope that this explains it all.

Australians call kiwis sheep shaggers in the interests of accuracy. New Zealanders call Aussies sheep shaggers because they do not have the imagination to invent their own insults (and, realistically, there is nothing about which to insult Australians).

Don't worry, there's no seriousness to it.
