I can think of a few reasons.
With the younger generation of Brits, they often travel here on working holidays. Sometimes they go don't even bother with hotels; they'll rent a room in a share house and go flatting in a major city, work a job or two and then whenever they get a little bit of time off from their casual job (be it bar work, cafe work or retail work) they simply pack their bags and go around the country, knowing that they'll have a room stay in and a job to work at when they get back to their "basecamp" city.
Also, the Pound is probably the strongest currency against the Australian dollar. They virtually almost triple the amount of money they have when they convert from Pounds to Aussie Dollars.
It is quite a long way to travel, so there is very little point of coming all the way from UK to Australia for a quick getaway.
The Brits and the Aussies have a sort of mutual understanding. Americans often say that British humour and Australian humour is exactly the same (though there are many subtle yet significant differences in reality)
And finally, yes, Australia used a British penal colony - but the vast majority of Australia's population are decended from FREE SETTLERS!!! Early on they were from Britain and later on from the rest of Europe and Asia. So a lot of the time, UK tourists are visiting family and relatives. |
|

But Why??
|
they need vitamin D, its not available over there. |

Most of the UK tourists I've met say, it's a very long way to travel, so why not make the most of it.
Also, often they are here visiting family. |

Who wouldn't stay for longer? We are awesome. I suppose there is that strong connection between the two countries. After all, it was the English who dumped their trouble-makers on some of the world best beaches (whats up with that). Plus that's a long way to travel. Savor the time here |

We dont have Queens in Australia. |
|

Very happily married.

Because it is so far away, we can do anywhere in Europe or even North America for a weekend but Sydney needs a lot longer to make it worthwhile. |

if u ever lived in the uk, you will be glad to be anywhere else that welcomes you, because it is so expensive outside there.
and you are treated like a king everywhere else. |
