Why does Australia have a population of only 21 Million People?

The UK has like 60 million and you could fit 30 UK's in Australia.

Will Australia ever become comparable to the USA?

Aussie
Well for a start we are a huge island continent that has just a thin strip of land around the coast that is capable of sustaining population.

Then , white settlement only began in 1788 so we came from humble beginnings & have really only started to make our mark on the world in the last 60 years with the post war migration programme.

Now we are a vibrant , multicultural society that can compete in many areas with countries with far larger populations .I don't see us as ever having the dominance either militarily or economically that the USA has....we could never sustain that sort of population !

One simple reason - water.

Australia's water resources are far more limited than the UK or the US and so also limit the capacity of the land to support so many people as you suggest. Much of the interior is desert and can't support wide-scale agriculture for supporting large populations. Most Australian cities and towns are on regular or permanent water use restrictions now. Even the natural increases in population expected in the next 20 years will put a strain on our water requirements. Australia simply cannot support the kinds of populations we see on other continents of the world.

1. Australia was only settled 221 years ago.

2. Large areas of Australia are desert, rainforest, bush, whatever. You can't live there as they are protected areas.

3. We don't breed like rabbits.

4. We don't want to be ANYTHING like america thanks very much !

Not all Australians are as mean as Ms. M. Please ignore her.

Australia doesn't share a long land border with an economically disadvantaged country, so illegal immigrants and their children aren't a large part of the population.
