A recent worldwide survey found NZ the 2nd safest place in the world to live, behind Norway. The US was in the 60's I believe, so who ever you gained your info from was seriously misinformed.

um...where are you getting your information from???

In New Zealand the police don't even wear guns!!.....I would say New Zealand would have the least, closely followed by Australia and then the usa would trail....far.....far.....far....far... behind....at least I'm happy to walk down the main street of every town in New Zealand at night! Can you say the same thing??

Doug you probably should think a bit more before you type. But I think I know what you mean "Why do Australia and New Zealand" have lower crime rates than the USA?"

The reality is that most English speaking countries have lower crime rates than the USA. You are three times more likely to be attacked by women in Detroit, USA than by men in London, England. There are many reasons for this but in my opinion the main ones are -

1. The USA puts too many people in prison for minor offences. This has to do with the popular forms of religion over there which can be very intolerant. While the minor offenders are in prison, they meet and are taught many criminal techniques by much worse criminals. When they get out they have trouble finding work because of the intolerant attitudes and sometimes have to go back to crime. In addition they may feel bitter and revengeful about their prison sentence.

2. There are many people in the USA who are on extremely low wages. There is no idea of a minimum wage in the USA, consequently some of them use crime to make some extra money.

3. There is little support in the US system for unemployment or other benefits. Some people in the US when out of a job can only get unemployment payments for a few months. See 2 above.

4. Many of the minor criminals are Afro-Americans. There is nothing wrong with Afro-Americans but in some areas they find it hard to get well paid work because of widespread racial prejudice against them. See 2 and 3.

These are not the only reasons but they are a start. Doubtless Americans reading this will get upset but I think they are true, more or less.

The convents sent to Australia have nothing to do with it. They stopped sending convicts to Australia about 1860 and even then they were a minority of the settlers that came to Australia. The British also sent convicts to the old 13 colonies of north America before the war of independence. Those 13 colonies became the first United States of America. In both north America and Australia most of the convicts that were sent were minor offenders, sometimes for crimes like shoplifting. The real bad ones like murderers and arsonists were executed in Britain. Jack and natarajan are writing nonsense.

Crime rates are actually falling in most countries.

Well I dont know where you got your info from ,but N.Z. was voted the 2nd most peaceful place in the world after Sweden, Australia wasnt too far down the list while the US of A was way down because of the gun laws Thailand was low too but that because of the unrest in the very south.

Harriet
Oh that is such a silly question. Firstly where's your info from? Secondly is this all crime? Or serious crimes? Proportionally based on population, or in total?

Australia and New Zealand both have crime, but they still both have low crime rates. In addition, some types of offences are extremely rare in both countries, particularly firearm-related offences (and those such offences are high in the US). Anyway your question makes no sense so you can't get an answer. If you want to examine proper statistics released by each country and ask a more specific question, then you can try that.

aubrey p
actuallly that is not true. norway , new zealand, and denmark are the top safest countries to live in.

I always think it amusing when Americans comment that the early settlers to Australia were often convicts. This is true but the reason is that the successful fight of the Americans to win independence from Britain meant that Britain could no longer ship its convicts to America. Britain sent tens of thousands of convicts to America to work the cotton and tobacco fields. Slaves were also used in America, they had about the same status as convicts. Probably as many Americans have convict ancestry as Australians and many many more have slave ancestors (including a lot of people who are unaware of it).

By the way when did the two words "a" and "lot" become one word? I have seen it many times.

Hhmm Doug, you're terribly misinformed...

Australia no crime? == the crime column in the local newspaper indicates otherwise; as does the size of the police force and prisons.

NZ more crime than the USA? == unlikely; NZ's worst massacre was in 1990; Virginia Tech massacre April 2007 which followed several other high school shootings.
There is no relative comparison between NZ and USA.

vivi
Don't understand the question. Australia has No crime? New Zealand has More crime than the entire USA? ( country of just over 4 million compared to a country of just over 300million)?

♥Bubble♥Pop♥Electric♥
Australia has plenty of crime you just don't hear about it as much as you do american. Where I live theres crime but not as much as other places, our car got stolen but that's the only thing that's ever happened

sistablu...Maat
Wish it was true but sadly Melbourne and Sydney are rife with street gangs and organised crime syndicates.
Some very heavy stuff goes down here, besides the infiltration to very high levels by businessmen who front organised crime, drug monopolies with the many associated murders and executions.
That is why the Purana police task force was formed and why there was $1,000000 AUST. on Tony Mokbels head.
This is stuff that you would expect to hear about only in New York or Los Angeles.
Reality, its happening right here in beautiful Melbourne.A city also that is considered one of the best and safest places in the world to live!.
Racial bashings, gay bashing, home invasion,rape,drive-by's snatch and bash robbery, alcohol and drug fuelled brawling at the clubs.
These are features of a normal weekend in Australian cities that we read about in Mondays newspapers.
Its just a fact of living in "these times".
Are you safe anywhere?
Is there a country where crime does not exist?
I've lived in St. Kilda most of my adult life. Years ago there were a lot of working girls and boys, drug dealers hanging on the corners and small time "crims'" doing the odd robbery and that was then considered enough to make St. Kilda a place to stay away from.
But in comparison it all seems quite petty and almost funny looking back in retrospect. Especially when you look at what is going on all over the city, including the outer suburbs.
I think its a bit of an uniformed statement to say N.Z. has more crime than Australia. But like every country in the world they certainly have more than enough to deal with.
Australia is still a wonderful place to be and live in. But to be so naive that you think somehow, we are immune from crime and criminals is pretty ridiculous.
The presence of crime has nothing to do with the country being founded as a penal settlement.
The original Anglo/Irish heritage has long ago been overtaken by our multicultural society.Australians of this generation now proudly carry the bloodlines of every country of the world.

i don't know but do you know the history of Australian people? they all started out as criminals. the british shipped the convict to Australia way back when. crazy to think because they are such people and the crime is low. go figure. where can we ship our criminals to? iraq?

I do not know whether there are no criminals in Australia but Australia after its discovery was used as the penal colony of Britain where it sent all its criminals when they were ex-communicated. Many of the present Australians are the descendants of these criminals.
Of course it does not mean they are criminals. I do not know about NZ also. But i think criminals are everywhere even in Heaven and such bland statements like no criminals in Australia etc cannot be believed.

Like being a DINK
What? They don't allow hand guns but that doesn't mean there is no crime. They have strange crimes, people get beaten with cricket bats, people are held up with cyringes, etc. Knive fights, bar brawls...
