Why does it take so long to fly to australia?

Additional Details
i understand its far away. but if the world is round y cant we go the other way round to get there. it would be a lot quicker and make more sense. it makes me doubt if the world reall is round.

Its the other side of the planet but also normally you have to change planes to get there, I had to on my way to New Zealand or you have to stop for fuelling so you have to add a few more hours on top of the normal flying time. It took me in all 21 hrs there and 23 hrs back. It doesn't matter which way you go either via USA or over Asia its exactly the same length of time, I have done both ways and there is no difference.

sarah s
Flew there many times..... and its not getting any closer, its far far away and the time zones don't help ya lol

Doesn't that rather depend on where you are coming from?
If you are coming from Britain it takes a long time because it is a BLOODY LONG WAY! However don't grumble because about 24 hours on a plane is better than weeks on a boat......

JimboBimbo
Oz is actually relatively close, but they tell us it is far away so we Brits don't all go their and don't come back. Doesn't seem to keep the Aussies out of Britain, so they obviously fly the short loop round the world.

it actually depends on where you are positioned in the world. If you live in New Zealand, it will only take an hour

well because it a really far ways away.

?

it depends where ur flying from, from england 4eva from newzealand not so long

Its probably due to the fact that Australia and the U.K are on different hemispheres and have a time difference of 8 - 12 hours ahead of G.M.T.
perhaps !

cherub
It takes longer to fly via America. Quickest route is via asia.

cuz its half way around the world and the planes can only fly so fast.

apart from
1. it being on the other side of the world and far away (about 20,000km), and
2. being several timezones ahead, and
3. the planes being only so fast, and
4. the journey requiring refuelling and crew change stops,
the earth keeps revolving in a west to east fashion, so one sees the sun rising in the east and setting in the west. thew planes also fly in the west east direction racing against the earth especially iuf you are travelling from Africa, Europe and the Middle-East. I dont know the flight path from the US though i suspect they fly downwardsand backwards hehehehehe

nettyone2003
Well if you're in the UK, the answer is because it's quite a long way away. If you're in New Zealand it won't take so long because its a bit nearer.

Alison S
Because of how far away it is!

mark

Because it's about 12 THOUSAND miles away.

Phil
Well from the UK it doesn't make much difference which way you travel, because Australia is right at the other side... which is why it takes so long!

sashs.geo
If you fly with new zealand airlines from the UK you fly the other way round - takes you even longer though.

If you set off from Singapore it's only 5 hours so maybe you should start your journey there.

Just exactly how stupid are you? One side of a sphere tot he othersid takes the sme time whichever way round you go.

tyler durden™
It's frigging around the other side, hence downunder.

nosdda
Because it is 23,000 miles away.

The answer could be because it is such a long way to fly lol. But I think the correct answer could be because you have to land to refuel and that takes quite a while. Lets put it this way I wouldnt like to stand in the petrol staion trying to fill it up. And before anyone answers and say they dont use petrol I know they use aviation fuel. Dont forget it will seem so long because they are about 10 hours in front of us.

txc142
Because skippy the bush kangaroo has actually taken over australia and make his money from the airlines, he makes the planes fly for longer so you pay more money so he can snort more coke

From New Zealand it doesn't take sooooooooo long, just a bit long. From the UK it takes very long becaause you are flying half way around the world. Of course, if you have anything to do with Satr Trek, you could just be matter transported and it wouldn't take you any long at all.
