Probably the same reason I don't go to see the attractions that people from out of town see in the area I live. When you live in a place you don't think of it as a place to sightsee, you want ot travel elsewhere to experience things but often there are great things in your own backyard! |

The Australian terrain is very dangerous and harsh. They probably don't travel a lot for the same reason that I would not travel in the woods. They have the most dangerous wildlife in the world. Snakes, bugs and God knows what else. A Doctor is many, many miles away. You have to airlifted to every where. If you get lost and don't have a radio or a way to get help, you are dead. Seems like a good enough reason to me to stay home. |

Same reason you haven't seen all 50 states.
It's here, it's ours so we don't see it as exotic. |

How much or how far is travel?
I traveled 1000ks to come to NSW by car by myself!
I've been to the UK by plane and visited Canberra but never been to Sydney or Perth
Where I lived in South Australia I had to travel 35 ks to get to the nearest shop
Most people don't travel in Australia because of distance ,when you have to pack a lunch to go shopping you don't really want to be bothered going very much further |

why don't Minnesotan's travel within Minnesota? Actually that is a pretty bad example because in Minnesota, we have the mall of america, Selma's Ice Cream, valley fair, ect (etc. i don't know how to spell it) |

i live in oz and would love to travel around australia, mainly the south west of w.a. and the gold coast.
other places i want to go have to do with culture and the things we dont have here, such as venice.
those i know who have travelled over seas went there for a particular reason eg - family is there etc.
i first went to bali but i dont think i will be going back there, ever.
and yes with the rising of terrorism and drugs being put in ppls bags travel within oz is on the rise. |

Not being lazy, I think it's the same here too. Since it's there, people take it for granted thinking they can go anytime they want to. And before you know it most don't go anywhere. |

Isn't there like a huge desert there full of little people with dart guns and spears? And isn't it home to like all the poisonous snakes and spiders in the world? I'd stay locked in my house too. |

When I lived in Oz a few years back, I did heaps of travel between Sydney and Melbourne by aircraft and often did the 12 hour drive...
Lots to see and do along the way... like anyone else, Aussies can be homebodies...

I was thinking that most of Australia is outback right?? It doesn't sound like a friendly place to visit... The coast sounds great though! |

Americans don't travel much within their own country or to other countries.
In Australia though, I think there's probably more of a reason for West Coasters to travel to the East, rather than vice-versa. Many Aussies also like to travel to Thailand, Indonesia and America. The Outback is very nice to get away from it all. Generally though, you'd probably have to travel along the coast to get anywhere. Traveling on those Outback highways is nothing like an American one. Going through the middle of the country, it can be miles before you see any sort of civilization. I suppose it may be like the American West, but who knows. I didn't see much of a reason for Aussies to travel within the country. |

i think its because we want to visit the places that we have seen in the movies while growing up,like the cowboy and indian movies etc, as there hasnt been as many Aussie movies.....and somewhere else proberly seems more exciting and mysterious |

The Aussies feel a little isolated on their island and for the most part, it is similar throughout. Therefore. they prefer to travel to areas like Europe etc where they can experience diverse cultures in a small area. They are the world's greatest travellers. |

I do not think that they are the only ones that suffer from this problem. I'm from Alaska and most of the people that live here rarely see their own state. I've traveled lots of places and it seems to me that locals rarely make an effort to see their own states. I have 15 siblings in up-state NY and not one of them has ever been to NYC. Its a shame, isn't it. |

I just cannot agree. I went to australia in January and I was on the gold coast and cairns and byron bay and brisbane and i met so many people that were visiting there from other parts of australia. Everyone i met except the shopkeepers in the gold coast area was visiting from all kinds of placees in australia. There were some tourists from other countries, too. But most were australian. So I have a totally different perspective. Seemed to me they traveled a lot for "holiday". |

because they want to go other places. If i was australian i would want to go other places than just australia. |

Aussie don't like to travel between the ages of 18-28 because they enjoy taking advantage of what the world has to offer. When they want to settle down then they focus on working in australia then traveling with their lil ones around the country. Most of their travel is done abroad at a younger age because they are single, and if you buy ticket from australia to go anywhere it will cost you lots of money, so why not buy a round the world ticket and do it over a lil bit of time. |

Thats a generalisation my friend, Since the world centre and Bali bombings internal toirism has risen about 30% Virgin Blue airlines and Quantas have really cheap flights and that makes it easier, eg Sydney to Perth $149.00

I have dual citizenship in Canada and Sri Lanka , but I am always interested in travelling to europe, africa or australia because it think it is way more fun.
I guess you don't really feel like travelling within your own country even though it is closer. |

Because once you have been furter than 200k inland it all looks the same. and everyone lives on the east coast so that rules out most places. why drive to centre to look at a stupid rock. Oh and NZ is cheaper |
