Why is Australia a monarchy and not a republic?

Australia is a monarchy today because the British government at the time of federation made it a condition of Australia becoming an independent nation we must adopt the British head of state as our head of state ( funnily enough if Britain becomes a republic the president of the Uk would be king/queen of Australia).
Australians have never had the option on voting for the monarchy, the closest we came was on a referendum on whether to adopt one or two suggested model from a republic, it was not a vote for a monarchy.

I think we need a simple plebiscite Republic or monarchy as the way to move forward, only once this is decided (and I expect the vote will be for a republic) should discussion start on what model to use, and the monarchists will not be able to continue to use the divide and conquer tactics which is why they so strongly object to such suggestions.

We have always been a monarchy with the Queen as Head of State ever since Australia was established.

I believe like people, Australia has grown up to be strong enough to let go and become a country on its own and not led by the 'Mother'.

Australia was Colonised by the British so we have been under the Monarchy ever since.

John Howard tried make Australia a Republic in 1999 and put the Vote to the Australian public. I guess the majority of the public voted no because here we are. I remember because it my first election as a voter.

Sparrow
Also because we voted on this issues some years ago and my fellow old fashioned Australians who are scared of change decided not to be a republic.

Bev M
Because nobody has had the guts to cut the umbilical cord tying us to Britain.

Australia is still a Monarchy because the people chose to stay as such at the last referendum.

Maybe one day, when a more suitable system can be agreed upon, Australia may change to a republic, and then have it's own President, or similar, to take charge of the country.

There are actually advantages of being a Monarchy, especially when the "independent" Monarchy's only power is to be able to call a general election, and allow the Australian People to re-choose who runs the country.

This power has only been used once, and the people voted for a change of Government at that time.

I feel this country needs a similar model, not one such as the USA, where the President is aligned with one particular Political party.

Cos they have a sovereign.

We'll be a republic within the next 10 years now that we have a forward looking Prime Minister who will put an acceptable republican model to a referendum. The last referendum was a farce.

Mr. W.
BECAUSE, It's a commonwealth country FFS

Nurse Kelly
Because in the last referendum, Australia voted against becoming a republic.

Mrs M
Because we voted to stay a monarchy.
