Why is Australia so underpopulated?

A country the size of the US with a population smaller than a city like Tokyo in a country the size of the UK....
why is it so underpopulated? are all the aussies running away to live elsewhere?

Because the vast majority of the country is desert. Really not all that great to live in!

Why do you think we're under-populated?

For the area of land, with water, we have we're doing ok.

We may be a similar size to the USA but how many people live in Death Valley, USA?

(Some of us don't appreciate what we have here until they gain experience of other countries and cultures.)

Aussies running away! lol you must be kidding, our country is loaded with immigrants that want to live a better life

most of Australia is uninhabitable so most people live on the coast

We like not having too many people like the US

Australia is not under populated, we have the biggest growing population of any country.

All the Americans and British are running away and moving here.

To answer your ignorance. Australia is a very new country, only first settled in the 1880s originally by convicts from Britain. The majority of Australians migrated in the aftermark of the World Wars. It is from the post war era in the 40s and 50s that the 'Baby Boomers' were born adding a huge population growth.

Now Australia allow massive number or immigrants into our country every year.

Australians inhabit the coastal areas and predominantly the east coast. The centre of Australia is dry desert and is almost inhabitable.

Being so called 'underpopulated' has it's advantages, as well as disadvantages. Also I don't think we are running away, Australia is a very isolated country. Unlike the Americas and Europe and Asia who just have to jump in a car and drive for a day to see another country, we have to fly to get to anywhere in the northern hemisphere.

I have had friends that have backpacked all over Europe from England to Russia and all have been happier in Australia then they were in Europe. We are not running away to live elsewhere most who travel will come back to Australia but a few will immigrate in another country just like everywhere else. If you see a Australian in another country ask him/her what is do good about Australia and I think you will be standing there for a long time.

Hope that answers your question.

Edit - Bigg O its all right to voice your own options because everyone has the right to one, but I hope you see the error of what you are saying latter on in life.

Most Australians live on the coast. The interior is mainly desert which cannot really support people living there.

We are also an isolated country considered 'far away from everything'.

if you look at what we have, we are vastly OVER populated!

the capital cities are at a record lows, down to 30% in some parts, some towns further out have as little as a 2% water level (yes, two percent!)

they say that 60 000 people move into South East Queensland every year....164 people a day.

Tokyo, London and other major cities of the world have the inferstructure and basic needs at an endless streatch. We are not so lucky.....our water will run out soon and our inferstructure is so old that it is just about too expensive to upgrade.

Australia is OVER populated!

we most proboly run away because people run here.did you know over 100 thousand new zealanders moved to australia in 2007?!thats huge
i have travelled uk europe asia and i met plenty of aussies, they all just have the travelk bug but ask where they want to settle down, they will tell u AUSTRALIA!!

most of it is desert.
and therefore unliveable.

i think 20,000,000 people (which is somewhat like the population of new york) spread all around a huge country is much nicer than all in one city.

i couldn't imagine how crazy the traffic would get in those huge cities. it's bad enough with melbournes 4,000,000 people

It is populated enough for me. I like my space.

It's simply not favorable by habitation by humans and most organisms.

And, just one more thing. You mentioned "A country the size of the US.....", Actually it isn't!!! The land mass of the USA is nearly 2 million square kilometers bigger then Australia.

I think we are a little overpopulated, there is just not enough water and the environment is too fragile to sustain a much bigger population.
Aussies love to explore the world, they are very well travelled. They usually go back home after they've explored though. They like to see what the rest of the world has to offer, not just assume they know it all.
