Ayers Rock, now better known by the name the first Australians gave it 'Uluru', is what is known in geological terms an 'inselberg', a rock mountain. It's all that was left of the original mountain range. The rock is easily recognisable due to it's immense size, and the fact that it's on a plain with no other hills/mountains to detract from it's size. The rock is also well-known for changing colour depending on the season, sun position, weather conditions.

Why? Umm... if you have a single rock THAT BIG, wouldn't it be quite obvious?

It also has a great significance to the indigenous people so, double that importance.

Cheers

PlatinumMan
Because it's a great big rock protruding out of the ground in an area where there are no other rocks...just desert. It also has huge spiritual significance to indigenous Australians. It features on every tourism ad. It's traditional name is ULURU.

It is like 8 km around it and 300m high and its red

kat
have you seen the size of it?????????? in the middle of the desert this random absolutely massive rock is there. & only about a third of it above the surface!!! pictures don't prepare you for it. & the shape is actually more of a traingle, but the pictures never show you that.
plus its really important to the aborigianl people in the area. heaps of sacred sites round there.
it's also the most amazing red colour. & it changes coloour at sunrise & sunset when the suns hine on it. it goes different shades of red. more spectacular at sunset. even goes a tad purple if i remember correctly. depends on the day too.

super sailor
because it is big and old

I'm not so sure that on an international scale, it would be that recognisable. Nationally the size is what people know, of course the Aboriginal significance is included but its mainly the size.
