It so isn't . . . the fact that melbourninans have this morbid fascination and obsession with having to state this fact in order to be able to prove it to themselves says it all!
God . . . get over it! You like Melbourne, we like Sydney.
You think by obtaining a bunch of people on answers saying they think it is better, Melbourne will magically be endorsed as the best city in Australia? FFS . . . who cares! I've had it with Melbourninans constantly asking this ridiculous question. We don;t need to ask in Sydney, we know! Yet, as this is totally subjective anyway it is of absolutely no importance whatsoever! |

less crime
better atmopshere - it's not all about workworkwork
everything is overpriced
melbourne has a funkier atmosphere
culture
better and cheaper food
LORD MAYOR JOHN SO
sydney is polluted
melbourne has better drivers
melbourne has the tallest residential building in the southern hemisphere, eureka and the tallest comercial building in australia, rialto
we hosted the olympic games first
we've got better schools
etc
my friend wrote a really good speech about it, funnily the school hired a women from sydney to judge the speeches
and didnt melbourne get voted the world's most livable city

I'm a fan of both cities.
I'm a Melbournian too (I agree with the earlier post, I can't write it your way either). The fact that Melbourne is home gives it the edge over Sydney for me. Otherwise, I couldn't split them.
Sydney is better for 'outdoor' pursuits. They have better beaches, and the harbour is an icon with good reason. I never get enough of looking at it.
Melbourne is better for more 'indoor' based activities, galleries, theatres, restaurants, bars, pubs, shopping etc.
As far as the people go, there is really little difference. Both are friendly and easy-going- as are the majority of Australians in general.
Weatherwise, someone made a comment about Melbourne being dull, grey and dreary, and while that is largely exaggerated, it does help to develop the distinctive Melbourne culture. It is widely acknowledged that Melbourne has a better live music scene for example. While Sydney with the perception of better weather for longer has more outdoor music festivals. |

Melbourne has many great advantages ~ it is a beautiful and spacious city, the trams are fun and the sights are interesting.
It has a great cafe culture, fantastic shopping, great seasonal colour foliage changes and many beautiful suburbs.
Nevertheless, I prefer Sydney. I love my exciting and interesting home town and while I always enjoy visiting your lovely city, 'home' is where the heart is!
Cheers :-) |

Ok Michael you're a melbournian ( yeah I know you wrote melburnian.. but I just can't lol ) ... now I am NSW born and raised ..... but I live in Melbourne by choice .. I LOVE Melbourne...
Sydney is .. ( forgive me Sydney siders ) somewhat Superficial .. and it has a SMELL.( well the trains have a smell.. kinda like tar)
melbourne is more friendly ... more comfortable ... more like *home*.. PLUS it is the home of the MCG...
:)
ERrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Catherine thanks for proving my point , I mean HOW THE HELL can you say ANYTHING bad about Melbourne if you haven't even been here to see??? Superficial SEE!!!!
EDIT: Not all about Sydney is superficial :) HI THING :) |

It isn't. Sydney has always been better than Melbourne and I have lived in both. Sydney really couldn't care less about the supposed rivalry, it is the second-best Melbourne that always tries to make out it is better. |

People are nicer in Melbourne - but Sydney got the Opera House and the Bridge. |

It's all pretty subjective but having lived in both and being from neither, I would agree that it's more of a preoccupation with Melburnians. Sydney has a great harbour and different areas have their own unique feel. The weather is good and there's a beach in the actual city! On the down side it's very crowded with bad public transport and clogged roads. Melbourne on the other hand has a fantastic public transport system if you don't live way out in the suburbs and also has endless amounts of beautiful gardens and buildings. On the down side, it has crazy weather, lots of flies and one huge disgusting, fire breathing casino that sucks the life from the locals. Supposedly it's a centrepiece??!! |

A place is only as nice as the people that live there. I have toured a considerable amount of Australia & only one place stinks because the locals think it is on the worlds most beautiful harbour & they love telling you how great they are. By the way, country NSW is nice. |

If you are a Melburnian then you shouldn't even have to ask why. The fact is it just is! We are better in every way. Our city is better our sportspeople are better and our Universities are better. |

Come to sydney. .And then you will be thinking differently..
Sydney is better than Melbourne... I have never been to Melb once in my life.. So there! |

You didn't have to say you were from Melbourne we could all guess as people that live there are the only Aussies that think it is better than Sydney.
Melbourne has great food but it is otherwise gray and drab - despite the over-the-top attempts at public art installations.
Sorry - I don't live in Sydney but it is definitely well ahead of Melbourne. |

well get this, sydney's icon is the sydney harbour bridge, and sydney peepl r sposed to love it so much they fire fireworks off it whenever they get the chance, but they love this bridge so much that they built a freaking tunnel instead, a tunnel that runs almost directly under the bloody bridge, i think that pretty much sums up sydney.....
id love to see them ditch the bridge one year and fire the fireworks off the tunnel.... |
