the inner part of Australia is desert,
we would not want a population increase such as India has! We enjoy a better standard of living and not as much poverty as India |

Hi,Australia's population is NOT less I don't know how you got that figure as we have just had a Baby Boy in NSW bring the figure to 21 million Australians, and that is increasing each year.
I could give you an answer on the last part of your question but better not. Waltx. |

No our Government has never controlled the birth rate here.
We're a small population because we like it that way.
Most of us only have the number of children that we can afford to provide for and educate to a high standard. |

most australians live on the outer coast of australia because most of the "inside" is desert. however some live in rural parts |

That is awesome that you answer your own question. The government doesn't control population, with education, less poverty and better access to health services, Australian's can control their own destiny. |

I have sat here for thirty minutes trying to write something that is not racist, but I just cannot word it right.
All I can say is that in Australia, we like to provide our children with the best we can. Having kid after kid and struggling just does not cut it here in Australia.
Damn it! I wish I could come out and say what I am thinking. |

Our population isn't controlled in the sense of limiting family size; in fact our government is encouraging families to consider increasing their family size from two (average) to three children. And whilst we do have immigration controls, immigration levels are historically high right now, as we have a chronic skills shortage and a booming economy.
As others have mentioned, most of the country is arid and unsuitable for farming, so we couldn't support an enormous population, but the country certainly could grow to support a much larger population than we have at present. The issue is in keeping that growth to a slow enough level to allow infrastructure (roads, telecommunications, housing, water supply, etc) to keep up.
But by far the primary reason why our population is relatively low, in my opinion, is that it takes time for a population to grow, and Australia was extremely sparsely populated until white settlement, which only began in 1788. Had white settlement begun earlier, I'm sure our current population would be much larger! |

Unfortunately India is a third world country where education is harder to obtain, people are poorer and less able to afford contraceptives. In Australia we are actually paid $4000 Australian dollars per child to go to the child's upbringing by the Australian Government. This is an incentive for more Australians to have children as the majority of our population is of the baby boomers generation who are fast approaching retirement.
The average Australian family has 2 children, we are blessed with good education as well as sex education from a young age and are pushed to use contraceptives to prevent unwanted pregnancy and disease, all in all Australia is a very wealthy country and many of its people decide on small family's later in life....this seems to be the trend.
Most people are deciding to put off having children till later to pursue their working careers as in many family's both the men and women are working and because of this also deciding to have a smaller more manageable amount of children is more appealing and cost affective. |
