The hell it isn't right to eat Kangaroo.... OF COURSE IT'S OK!!

You know it is really irritating when people give an opinion WITHOUT knowing the full details........

Now what a lot of NON-AUSSIES and perhaps even some Aussies aren't aware of is that sice European settlement .. the population of Kangaroos has greatly increased ( with the exception of a couple of species of roo)... NOW this is because we have introduced farming crops which have increased the food source.. and because we have irrigation. SO the roos are more numerous NOW than before.....

ALSO .. Kangaroos are not harmful to the environment as Beef farming is .. Cattle produce a hell of a lot of methan and that contributes to climate change.....

Kangaroo meat is a little rich for some.. but i prefer it over beef .. it is a wonderfully high in protein meat .. low in fat and cholesterol.

it is better on the rarer side than the well done side as you may as well munch away on an old pair of leather boots.

ALSO .. People in the USA eat Buffalo .. do they not ?? Well That is the same as us AUSSIES eating roo... It's a native animal and NOT a pet.

ALSO .. so many non -aussies ( and some aussies .. my own brother included) seem to think that roos are nice cuddley animals .. but they can be very defensive and can cause great injuries ( a small boy at the Gosford reptile park a few years ago had his stomach torn open)

SO .. I WILL continue to eat Kangaroo . .and I don't care what other people think ...

If you're from Australia, it's not bad at all, but the rest of the world sees kangaroos as cute and cuddly, furry little creatures...which makes it sad to eat them. So, it's all based upon your perspective.

Well if it's ok for South Africans to eat Springboks, then why should it be bad?

They sell Kangaroo meat over in the UK (I'm Aussie but living in London). We have an Australian pub called "Walkabout", and you can get Kangaroo burgers and Kangaroo Steaks on the menu.

The first Kangaroo ever seen by a white man was killed and eaten... and Aboriginals have been eating Kangaroos for probably longer than white men have been eating cows. 10's of thousands of years.

It's no worse than Americans or Europeans eating cows. I've worked with cows, with those big sad eyes. I reckon they are more cute and cuddly! And the calves - wow, are they cute. But they make great veal too.

It would be wrong to eat any of the low population kangaroo or wallaby species. But we don't, they are protected. The only Kangaroos we are allowed to kill and eat are those that are in huge populations, many millions of them, and in much larger numbers since farming provided far more year round watering places. Positively a pest in many parts of the country.

The country would be ecologically much better off if we cut down on the number of cattle we have, and sustainably harvested the Kangaroo population instead. And most nutritionists reckon Kangaroo meat is healthier for us than beef - naturally lean. Nice and tasty too.

i dont think it is.
ive eaten it before.. it was a bit gross but thats just me.
theres an overpopulation of kangaroos so eating them is better than eating cows or sheep anyway. best idea is to become a vegaterian if your opposed to that sort of stuff.

Kangaroos can be seen as a pest even though they are native. anyway. did this help?

Iskandar
I love to eat kangaroo, its so lean and tender with little fat, much better than beef steak. Yeah I know its on our coat of arms but they're just so tasty.

Just as long as people don't eat koalas, That is a national symbol too, but come to think about it, I would imagine that koala meat wouldn't be to good because of their low nutritional appetite of gum leaves.

as long as they aren't eating koala bears it's fine!!

To my knowlege (I am australian) its not bad at all. Kangaroo is a traditional bush food, and is really high in iron and low in fat. Its also very tasty! There are so many kangaroos in the country that they are sometimes culled to keep the numbers from being in plague proportions. I'd rather see the animals being farmed for their meat and fur, rather than just shooting them and letting them rot.

Is it? I mean apart from the cuteness factor and the whole eating animals thing...

I guess it's not bad. You eat what you want. If you want to. But alot of people Like kangaroos and say EWW! WHY EAT A KANGAROO! they should really leave people alone!

=]

Vanessa G
It's actually the leanest and probably best meat for us to eat. Beside the fact we are desert and can not sustain traditional english farming of cows and sheep which has lead to mass soil erosion and extinction of many of our native species.
You go girl and well done for eating them. They cull them so why waste great and healthy meat?

molly
Its not bad they have been eaten in our country for longer than sheep or cows.
When I got married my mother-in-law an elderly Aboriginal lady tried to teach me how to cook it no-one cooked it like her but I never really liked the taste of it too rich for me.

We also eat Emu too.

Eating Kangaroo meat isn't that common though. The meat as i understand it its extremely tough and hard to digest. Usually Roo meat isn't sold as a delicacy, it is sold as Dog food. The meat only comes from Kangaroo cullings. The cullings are necessary for the survival of the species, as they already over populate the Australian continent and would literally eat themselves to starvation otherwise. Oddly enough eating Kangaroo meat is a lot healthier than many other meats that humans eat. Roo meat is high in fibre and quite low in fat. So the answer to the question is that eating Kangaroo meat isn't bad for you, but it might do your head in trying to figure out why both the national animal symbols of Australia are on the menu.

Dan
What are you talking about? Kangaroo is good to eat!

I'd say everyone here should at least try it once before making any presumptions.

Because kangaroos are cute and shouldn't be eaten. I didn't know until this week that they ate them. Thats like Americans eating dogs or cats. Its just not right.
