Because of the accent.
:3

Tainruadh
Its not accent, its dialect. The American word for Oztrailia is Awstralia

It's because Americans usually have a cheeseburger wedged between their mouths.

Have you ever noticed that we say a lot of others words differently too?

Try accent.

Sigourney
British people say Ostralia as well. Our accent deems it Auztralia, hence it is the 'correct' version....Our country, our name pronunciation.

Well I guess if you think about it , Ossie is more phonetically correct....it is Australia not Auztralia !

I am not even going to bother to try and answer this question.

Simply because of the problems faces by trying to represent accent in text in Y!A.

thats the same as saying
why do australians spell mum like M.U.M
And Americans spell it like M.O.M
we all just talk different so its spelt differnt

Because we say "Oss" tralia here, not "Oz" tralia. Just a difference in accent.

edit: No, we say "Wizard of Oz", and "Zebra", just like you think. Now, if you spelled it "Auzzie", we might say it that way.
