The Australian flag is NO where near like the American flag!

Look at the Australian flag here http://www.flags.com/index.php?cPath=8759_210_3580 and the NZ flag here http://www.flags.com/index.php?cPath=8759_210_3700 - now they are similar !

Both do have stars, and both use the colours blue, white and red.

In that, the countries both were under influence of Britain when the flag was designed. (I have heard that for the first Americans, even though they did not want to have anything to do with Britain anymore they did not think about using other colours for their flag.)

But the colours Red, White and Blue are used in many flags. Among them Russia, Netherlands, France, UK, New Zealand.
And I am sure many more, these are just on the top of my head.

If you want to see a flag that looks like the Australian flag, look at the New Zealand flag.

DONT EVER INSULT US

The_Mouse
They are similar because either you have not seen them or you are highly visiually impaired.

They are NOT at all similar.
Keep wondering.

What the...?

Are you a seppo (a yank) by any chance. Surely you can't be so dence! We are not and never will be a part of he US. Our flag, our southern cross is important to all aussies. Fool!!

Elizabeth
Similar to the flag of the United States in what way?
They're both flags, both red, white and blue, both have stars, that's where any similarity ends.
Have you seen both flags?

mmdjaajl
the only thing the same is the size
but if you are blind & useing brail to (see) them thay may apear the same

sexc_n_h0rny_now
the australian flag has nothing to do with the ugly american flag. Don't insult us by associating our flag with your rubbish.

tuppenybitz
other than colour how is it similar?

girlsjustwannahavefun666
because both countries were setteld by the UK

iansand9876
They are similar in that stars are used to represent the states, although the Federation Star (the non-Southern Cross one) uses the points of the stars to represent the States. The Union Jack is similar to the concept of the 13 stripes because it is an acknowledgment of history.

But all the above is a bit of a stretch. Colours and the fact that they are both made of cloth are the only real similarities.

both the US and Aussie flags have cantons - (a top left quarter that is destinguishable from the rest of the flag)

cantons are not on all flags but are extremely useful for flags at sea because they can be turned upside down as a distress signal and be clearly seen as being upside down.

both flags were developed from British ensigns- these are british flags used at sea since our Union flag cannot be turned upside down and easily recognise from a distance as being so - so we have seperate ensigns whjch are flags with a Union flag in the corner and either a blue or red field (there is also a white naval ensign which is irrellevent for this answer)
the US flag was developed from our old red ensign without the irish cross on the union flag
the Aussie flag was developed from our blue ensign.

quite a few countries and territories have our Union flag in the canton

as for the stars on the Aussie flag only one has 5 points the southern cross stars have 6 points (i think) and the star below the canton has 7 points- representing the 7 states.
the US flag stars are all 5 pointed and each of the 50 represents a state.
there are many flags of the world with stars on them this doesnt mean they are similer with the US flag- the US flag is actually one of the newer flags of the world.. others had stars before it did.
the flags with stars i could name fro the top of my head are here - USA pakistan, turkey, cape verde islands, iraq, austrailia new zealand, alaska (now of couirse a US state but the stars on its flag are also a constillation just like Aussie) and quite a few other islands round the Aussie area with southern crosses on them.

they are not deliberatly similer its just that alot of countries flags have been influenced by our british flags.

if u want flags similer to the USA check out the flags of Liberia whos flag is deliberatly influenced by the US and Malaysia whos flag is NOT deliberatly influenced by the US flag. also Puerto rico and Chile (whos flag is an exact reverse of puerto rico) US state flags Ohio and Texas... these to name flags that Are directly similer to the US

Exactly how is it similar?

We have a Union Jack in the corner...America has Stars.

We have a blue background with the Southern Cross (a constellation of stars seen in the southern hemisphere)...America has stripes.

We also have a seven pointed star which signifies the seven states...America has more signifying their states in the top corner....

Apart from the use of stars and colours...and a lot of countries use similar layouts and colours (there are only so many colours you know!) ....Our flag is NOTHING like theirs....and I take offence at the suggestion.

Baba
instead of making up something im gonna be honest with you....i dont know do you?
