20-25 years ago when anyone spoke of Australia, especially internationally everyone talked of Sydney, the Opera House and the Bridge. Then Melbourne became the most liveable city in the world and the most cultural, entertaining and lively city in Australia stealing Sydney's thunder. Melbourne getting the Grand Prix and the Tennis amongst others made it the place to be in Australia and Sydney were not happy, so started badmouthing Melbourne with things like it always rains in Melbourne when in fact Sydney has the highest annual rainfall, and that's how it came about. I live in Melbourne but I think Sydney is a great city as is Melbourne with different things to offer and it's time we join as one Australia and stop with this ridiculous carry on, that does make us as a country look bad overseas. |

Melbourne....First Australian Capital. Sydney jealous
Melbourne....First to host the Olympics. Sydney jealous
Melbourne....Voted Worlds most livable city. Sydney jealous
Melbourne....Boxing day test. Sydney jealous
Melbourne....Hosts international sporting event. Sydney jealous
Melbourne.... has Moomba.Sydney has the gay mardi gras
All Sydney has is a bridge and an Opera house. Sydney has always been jealous not only of Melbourne, but of every other Capital city in Australia.
Bev M- I have been to Sydney on a number of occasions. Just point out to me what part of what i have stated is inaccurate |

Why is there rivalry???? |

there a rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne because they are the two biggest cities in the countries, this happens everywhere you go, just like in the US its between N.Y.C and LA
and i no its also in Egypt, between Alexandria and Cairo..lol |

Jealously, I believe.
Both are big, important Aussie cities, who both want to be considered Australia's 'best city.'
Both have fun and exciting things to offer. |

because melbourne is better and sydney wont admit it.
nah it's cos we're both big cities and so we have to fight each other for events like the olympics etc. that's why canberra was invented, because we were fighting over who should be the capital city. |

look mate its something that happens in every country of the world on different scales. two big cities that just compete to be the best. it mostly starts with sport rivalries and nationalist disputes. this happens in england(london-manchester or london-liverpool) usa (you can see it with boston and ny), spain(madrid and barcelona, this is a tough one because of the separatist interests of catalonia) and many other places. |

It's a Melbourne thing. Sydney folk just regard Melbourne as that city in Victoria. No rivalry. |

Personally, I think this is a big media build-up. When I lived in Melbourne, nobody even mentioned Sydney. When I moved to Sydney, nobody even cared about Melbourne. The only person I ever heard compare Melbourne to Sydney was a wealthy elderly lady who went to Melbourne every year to buy her winter coat because, she said, Melbourne had much better clothes to buy. I think this may have been because people in Sydney are much more laid back casual dressers [because of the weather maybe]. I loved both cities when I lived there.
DFTM - Bet you've never even been there. Sydney has the most beautiful harbour in the world bar none. Melbourne has wonderful things too. You're the type that cause people to think they are rivals. |

Sydney is a global city and Melbourne wants to be and is jealous. It's like they are a little brother looking for approval |
