Cloe can't even spell Chloe - no wonder Americans have such a bad reputation in the world! You are allowed two weeks off school in term time in the UK with the head's permission. Obviously "Cloe" thought that you only had to go to school for two weeks a year. |

cloe you are a silly little cow.. but yes why shouldnt we.. as long as no exams or tests are on i dont see the problem, tour operators are ripping us off big time in the holidays, there should be some kind of law stopping them doing it |

We are allowed to take the children out of school for 2 weeks, - I took my 7 and 4 years olds out last year for 3 weeks and the teachers weren't too happy - but I had originally booked part of the holiday over a half term and the travel company changed it.
What is really annoying though, is the fact that because of supply and demand the prices rise during the summer holidays - so a lot of mere mortals cannot afford to go anyway, but anybody who send their children to a private school - get more holidays a year and so can afford to go on holiday when they are not so expensive!
My argument is that going on holiday is an education in itself and a child can learn a lot about a different culture. On the other hand if it is a critical time for the child exam wise - it is probably best to leave holidays until the school holiday time so that they do not miss out on critical education. |

I always take my kids out of school in school time for a holiday. this year India for 4 weeks. Got my son to do a topic on India and he did a presentation to his class when we got back... that keeps them of your back....the teachers im on about... *uck them.... maybe teachers can afford big air fares lets face it... they get half the year off with pay...Take your cordroy trousers to the costa... but we go when we like. |

You can take children out of school for holidays as long as you tell the school in advance and they do not happen when children are having any tests. |

I think their argument is that if you decide to take your children on holiday during term time, they will miss parts of the syllabus and fall behind in their work. Maybe this isn't as important for primary schoolers as it is for high schoolers, but it does set a bad balance between learn and play. Most parents opinion may probably be that because airlines, hotels and tour operators put their prices up during school holidays so unsympathetically, this is the only time they can afford to go on a much needed getaway. |

Taking the kids out of school really only becomes an issue when they are doing their vce years and although the teachers jump up and down I dont believe it does the kids any harm.
I am not really talking from being a parent who has taken their kids out of school for long periods but from one who has had a son who missed 7 weeks of year 10 due to an accident. I worried and stressed over him missing the schooling and he went back to school and hadnt really missed much of anything.
If you time the vacation just prior to school holidays or just after that can make a huge difference as most schools wind down the week before holidays and the kids dont do much. |

It's the tour operators who are exploiting parents that really p1ss me off, not the schools. If pupils arbitrarily go on holiday during term time it really messes things up for the teachers, as they have to make sure the pupil in question hasn't missed anything vital. Going to school is a legal requirement and schools have to submit attendance statistics to the government - they will get a bad reputation if their attendance statistics go down. If you can't afford to go abroad during the school holidays, then take a cheaper holiday in your own country. Don't jeopardise your child's education for the sake of a holiday. |

I totally agree with you, its like the damn teachers and travel agents hold the rest of the country to ransom, I get so cross every single year over it, we have no kids but my husbands holidays are fixed ones as his company works round parents alone so we have to have our holidays in school term time when the prices are high, we have decided next year he is just going to take two weeks off so we can get a bargain bucket holiday too like everyone else seems to out of school term holidays, go for it yourself and sod the teachers and government, you deserve at least one decent holiday. |

In the Uk at my sons school they are really clamping down on us taking our children out of school during term time. Think we are legally allowed to take them out of school for 10 days in one school year. Any longer needs specialist permission from the head teacher. The Uk have also introuduced fines if children consistantly miss school |

Gets me too.
My family live abroad, and TBH I can't afford to pay to fly out to see them in the summer holidays.
It costs near 1000.00 for just flights which I think is disgusting.
If I go in term time it costs less than half!!!
Why should my kids miss out on seeing their Grandparents???? |
