Oh that sucks well i dont think you can actually do anything about it, i mean if your mother aint lettin you come back here tho the US, im sure when you turn 18 you'll be allowed to chose and do whatever you want with your life. Just make the best of it, do what you like to do, like similar stuff you used to do when you lived up in cali.. i know. i know its way different not having your close friends but try to meet people you are similar to. good luck!

what choice do you have if ur mum wont let u go home? I moved from nzl to gold coast 3 mths ago and absolutely love it....maybe a different part of aussie would be good for you? do you work? on a course? still @ school? maybe put all that negative enrgy into something useful? you might just get to like aussie if you gave it half a chance. good luck newayz

If you live in an area of Melbourne where " the majority of people are a**holes and wannabe "thugs", I'm not surprised that you don't like it there. Don't judge all of Australia (or even all of Melbourne) on your experience so far. Most Americans love it here but I doubt if any would be living anywhere that the people could be described as "a**holes and wannabe "thugs".

Don't forget that there are areas of California that aren't so good either and anyone who found themselves in your situation would probably say the same or worse - and they'd be mistaken in terms of the rest of the state or many other areas of the USA.

Give Australia more of a chance and if you move, at least come north to Queensland for a while before you consider going back to the States. You'll be amazed at the difference!

As someone who knows many Americans and was born in Australia, Aussies have an inferiority complex as always seek approval from other countries, kinda like the annoying little brother. I find small town Americans are much nicer than Aussies but big city Americans (DC, New York etc) are similar

Melbourne is a wonderful city but it can be a difficult place to live if you're from elsewhere. You don't have to be from overseas just from somewhere else in Australia like my family.
We lived there, in Mount Waverley, for 3 years and the whole family was happy when we had to move to Queensland, for work related reasons.
Some people were great but most of the locals were less than welcoming.
Melbourne is a city you either love or hate, I love to visit but wouldn't want to live there again.
Why do you think thousands of Victorians move north every year? They don't enjoy it there anymore either.
Don't judge the whole country by idiots you've met in Melbourne.
You need to try somewhere further north.

Also remember not everyone is suited to Australia.
If you do prefer the USA maybe could return to do university there. I can easily see why you would yearn for the lifestyle etc that you grew up with. I know I'd be homesick if I were in your position.

Hey I feel your pain. I am an American living in QLD for two years and understand. Its not that I don't like Australia, it is a fine place but I too, just want to go back to what I am used too. Aussies find that hard to understand and become extremely defensive when anyone says they want to move back to where they came from. I will eventually move back but it is not that easy to just up and move back when I sold everything back in the US. Since you are so young and I don't understand why your mothe won't let you move back unless you need to finish school or something?? The best way to go back is to get a job, and save your money for a one way plane ticket and maybe some other relatives can help you? The other way is if you have finished high school, go on monster.com and try and line up a job in the US now so that you would have work right away.

Maybe the fact that you really dont want to be here isnt helping you to appreciate all the good things about Melbourne and, lets be honest here, not all is bad.

To label all who live here as thugs and aholes is a bit melodramatic and ridiculous. Im sure you could point to any city in the world and the same could be said that there are some 'unsavoury' types there but not everyone falls into that category.

Im also sure your mum understands you are wanting to be somewhere else but is obviously unable to let you go for her own reasons.

I doubt that going anywhere else in Australia is the answer for you, you already have made up your mind that there is nothing for you here so, as someone suggested, start saving and maybe you can work out a way of going home again.

Melbourne sucks. Move to Queensland. You said the people were a**holes. If that isn't an exaggeration, maybe you're meeting the wrong people if you think that about them.

It's hard, especially if you didn't wanna move to begin with. I'm in that situation (have moved from Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand). No matter how hard i try, it's not home and it doesn't have my friends, my family, and the places i know.

I've only been here for 11 months, but i would move back if i could. Still, i'm learning to accept that it's not as bad as i make out and i'm actually finding myself settling more. I've never been to Melbourne before, but if i had to choose, i'd go for suburban Northern Sydney, or somewhere like Brisbane or the Sunshine coast. Maybe when you're old enough for your parents to let you move, you can try one of those before you jet off back to the US. Australia isn't small, and some places are completely different. The people in Western Sydney can be the opposite to those in Northern Sydney, so you've just gotta try it out for yourself!

Btw, i'm interested in what it if you prefer about cali! :) Might give us more light on the situation.

Good Luck!

You got it wrong Jason Bourne! It is not the Australian population that seeks approval, its our stupid government wanting to stay in the good books of more powerful countries..

I couldnt give a flying **** what American's think of Australia and as far as im concerned, turn 18 and leave. You've only been to 1 city in Australia and you have judged the whole country?? I am from Melbourne (lived here all my life) and i don't think its that bad.. I have heaps of American friend who absolutly love Melbourne (and Australia). They have even moved back here permanently because once moving back to the states, they realised how good Australia really was..

And yes, you are right about something. We really don't want you here...
