Why were the Irish who migrated to Australia called 'green-n****s', when they clearly have very white skin?
obviously not because they were labourers, as all early Australians were heavy labourers Additional Details My family is of Irish origin, Im a New Zealander, I just put the labour coment in because I thought I would receive a barage of 'because they do all the physical work' answers. Also I dont know what some of you are talking about there? maybe they were called green ninjas because of their flexibility and self understanding?
The national colour of Ireland is green and they were treated as second class citizens, in the days of the British Empire.
There were still signs in Britain in the 70's that said:
No Blacks
No Dogs
No Irish

The Irish weren't very highly regarded by the English, they were viewed by the English in the same way as black slaves were viewed by the southern Americans.
Donkey Dick
They may be called that name by you & others - but not by Australians.
Where did you get this ridiculous information from? I know many Irish - as work mates, friends & drinking buddies. It is a term never used in Australia.

I'd like a source for this happening in Australia - have not heard of it. I've also seen no sources on the net for it in USA that I'd take notice of .. might be an urban myth.
** LATER: you still don't even give one source for this happening .. I feel very doubtful that it did.

Where did you get that info?
I've never heard of that term and half of my family came here from Ireland.
(N*****s was never a well used term in Australia.)
By the way, it's NOT true that "all early Australians were heavy labourers". (Some were quite slender and light weight.)

im irish i never heard of that

green what??

I'd probably say because of the difference between Ireland and Australian. Australia is a desert country, with greyish green trees. Ireland on the other hand, has lush green grass, and rolling hills. That'd be my best guess
