With the strict laws on quarantine in australia ie plants and fruit is it safe to bring a wooden walking stick?

Show all answers

Aussie the 2nd
It will be closely examined by quarantine officers & if there is the slightest thought that it might have borers in it they will send it to be irradiated....cost approx $60

rustupd
wood will be treated before you can get it back from quarantine as it may contain bugs

Ozmaniac
The worst that will happen is that they may spray it with something to kill possible pests, though I very much doubt if anything like that will be required. It won't be confiscated unless it's sprouting or riddled with bug holes and it wouldn't be much good as a walking stick if that was the case.

tuppenybitz
depending what type of wood and where its coming from you may have to pay to have it treated

it would be. you wear a cotton shirt do you not?

its not going to bring in anything that could damage agriculture- especially if its old and/or varnished so it will be fine

Billybean
Very probably O.K. if it is a solid hardwood stick.
However, take no chances and if it is your favourite one with a silver handle etc then don't risk it.
Ordinary "medical use" ones should give no trouble.
In any event, you can buy walking sticks in Australia, so why bother unless you actually need it to walk with.

it depends what wood it is and if you live in the country or the city. and where you have been in recent months. also is the walking stick treated wood. if so. then you might be fine. find out what wood it is and then phone oz embassy in london and ask. that would be the most solid answer you will get.
