Wonderful Australians?

Wow, I just returned from Australia and the people were amazing. Racism does not exist in Australia. I don't know why so many people were saying that as a Black American, I would have a tough time in Australia.
Australia is a happy place with no problems.
God Bless Australia.

Thanks for letting us know that you enjoyed yourself and were well treated here. That's exactly what I would have expected, but for some reason, Australia has very unfairly been branded as a racist country. Of course we have some racists here as does every country, but they're very much in the minority and are not at all representative of most Australians or of our government.
Some (far too many) people don't seem to understand what racism is. If an individual who happens to be Aboriginal or Asian, or Black American or whatever is disliked solely because of their actions, that is not racism. Racism is when assumptions are made and attitudes are formed based on a person's race or origin. Australians take people as they find them. If you're a nice, decent person, it won't matter what colour, race or creed you are, you will be accepted - that is how you found us.
Come back and visit anytime.

Thanks I'm glad your experience was all good. Come again.

Well done come back anytime we like you Aussie for ever.~~

The difference with Australians is we are not generally racist of the person standing in front of them. Their are some really racist people but because we are a multicultural society we generally give all people a fair go.

Glad you had a great trip, make sure you tell all your mates. How good we are.

Why are so many people determined to label Australians racist? The original poster had a pleasant experience. Perhaps that shows that what we think of racism is pretty small potatoes on a world scale.

Hi - glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately there is a streak of racism in Aussies (as there are in most groups) often - as identified above - against Aboriginals in particular. Asians are also a favourite target largely because of the longstanding fear that the Yellow Hordes would come south looking for resources, land and White Women.

We do have less of a "thing" about mixed race couples than other countries and Black Americans are not going to get much of a negative reaction as our only experience with them has been servicemen who are generally pretty well behaved.

Try wearing a Hijab and unfortunately you will see a nasty side of Aussies.

We do have a way to go, but are working on it. Ethnic communities have integrated well here and most people now recognise that Immigration has made our community vastly richer than it otherwise would have been.

For those who moan about how racist Aussies are obviously have little understanding of how racist asians, middle easteners, greeks, chinese and - welll just about everyone else, really - can be.

You are joking or maybe you didn't spend much time in Australia?

Of course racism exists in Australia since it is populated with all sort of human beings with various ideas.

Hope it is true that you had a great time in Australia though :-)

I am so happy to hear that you enjoyed it, I am glad you noticed that there is no racism regarding colour, there may be a little racism regarding religion or nationalities, but very little. We manage and do not mistreat others nor are we prejudice in our day to day living.
I have many times wondered why all the racism regarding colour in America, I still can't understand how people distinguish them selves as black or white when they have a nationality to be referred by.
I actually enjoyed my trips there too. I find the people are very nice and I am talking over 10 years ago. Love New York City.

Cheers.

On the fence
If you think racism does not exist in Australia you are seriously delusioned.

You were lucky to see that side of Australia and I'm glad you had a great trip because of it :-)
Unfortunately a lot of the other posters are right - there is quite a lot of racism in Australia, especially towards our own indigenous population and towards Muslims, who are a very misunderstood part of our society mostly due to the media. There's even (although this is mostly light-hearted) strong stereotypes between Australian states! Ask any mainlander what they think about Tasmanians!

Australia does have racism like everywhere else.

Maybe you weren't actively looking for it, but trust me Australia does have racism.

wotzthepoint?
Oh give me a break!

Black americans tend to be flavour of the months with a lot of white aussie women, or more often 'forbidden fruit'. Australia has a long history of racism, particularly the instutionalised variety. You are either very naive or blind and deaf to not realise that this country has racism. Anyone suggesting that racism doesn't exist in this country must have been only in the country for 2 minutes. You probably either 1) were intimidating to most racists 2) hung out with a bunch of sycophants or 3) met some decent aussies. Besides Aboriginal people, there are many Asian, Middle Eastern, Africans or poms who could recount countless incidents of xenophobic racist aussies.

Tell that to the Aborigines idiot. If you never met a racist Australian then you obviously never left Sydney. To say that there are no racists in Australia is to say that there are no racists in the world. What a set of idiots. Aussies are even racist towards white English. People that say Australians are not racist I don't think have ever even been to the country.
