Wondering what Australians think......? |
Was wondering what people in Australia think of people from the U.S.A. I want to move there someday because I hate the U.S.- maybe it will get better now that Bush is gone! But anyway, I have always wanted to go to Australia but now I have been reading that they hate our accents and think we are loud obnoxious idiots. What do you think of us, our accents and are U.S. immigrants "welcome." |

Honestly, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the accent, it has more to do with bush, and the fact that like anywhere else people remember the 'bad' tourists. Australia is so mixed up multi culturally that you won't make a blip on the radar, people over here don't pick people or races to hate, unless you're ignorant or stupid, and let's face it they are everywhere. Put it this way, if you are a friendly happy person you will be great in Australia, honestly, don't believe the hype, get your butt over here. Australians will take you on 'what comes out of your mouth' not 'the accent you say it in'. Australians would more likely pat you on the back for 'getting out' I swear to God, whichever God you believe in, it's all ok here.

ALL people are welcome in Australia! We love tourists here. American accents are cool. I would suggest you just come and see for yourself. We are a very multi cultural society here, with people from all walks of life and nationalities, it's part of what makes Australia great. By the way its Australia day here and you may get allot of patriotic responses to your question.
P.S. Congratulations on your new president! |

I'd like to think that in Australia, it's not where you're from that determines how people react to/welcome you, but the kind of person you are. Admittedly, and sadly, this doesn't always happen.
The issue that sometimes crops up with Americans is not that they're American: it's that there's a culture difference that leads some Americans to behave in a way that is just not really considered 'normal' in Australia. For example, while Australians are rightly noted for being friendly, it's in kind of an understated way. It's not loud and in your face. If you come across as loud and 'in-your-face', whether you're from Australia, America, China, or whatever, you'll probably be treated with a few sarcastic comments and dry jokes.
Also, no matter where you're from, there's no point in coming here and saying 'oooooh, but this is how we do it at home and it was soooooo much better'. This applies to people coming TO Australia, or Australians going somewhere else. If you don't want change, don't change your address.
It's just a matter of knowing the culture you're coming to: as I say, here there's kind of a dry, understated sense of humour, a relaxed way of doing things, not being too overbearing, maybe taking a little time to get to know people, and so on.
If you do come, just be open to new experiences, a new sense of humour, a new way of life, and enjoy it for what it is. And, hopefully, Aussies in the USA will do the same. In my humble opinion, any negative view of the US comes from the perception that America (and, rightly or wrongly, AmericANs) has always been a bit introverted: more interested in what's going on in their own backyard than acknowledging and incorporating the views and interests of the rest of the world. Show people that they're wrong in this, and there'll be no problem. It's a sad fact that, even if it's incorrect, there is a bit of a negative stereotype to counteract. |

Walk into any Australian workplace and you will hear accents from every continent on the Planet and yes even some American ones too.
We don't care where you come from we only care about how you get along once you get here.
Most Australians will bend over backwards to make you feel welcome in our Country no matter where you've come from.
Unless your English. |

I love American accents and most Americans. A few are loud-mouthed, rude and obnoxious and they stand out from the crowd here because of their different accent but they're in the minority and any fair minded Aussie would know that. Goodness knows, we have our share of loud and obnoxious Aussies too! Many of us have been against some American foreign policies but realise that a large percentage of Americans haven't been supporters of them either; your new President should make a difference on that front.
Most Americans love it here and fit in well and you're more than welcome as tourists and immigrants. |

well i don't really like the accent, i think it's a bit annoying, but that wouldn't stop me from welcoming you to my country. While I realise it's just a stereotype and probably not too true, we do tend to think of Americans as loud obnoxious way too patriotic idiots.
But I think you should come and try to disprove that stereotype. |

I have visited USA several times and still have some friends there. I like you Americans and have no argument with you. Your accents are ok but I find the southern accent does grate a bit on me, but do not hate it. If you come here and accept our way of life you are more than welcome. By the way you may get called "septics" (for septic tanks- yanks) but that is only the same as the English being called poms. As long as you do not run down our country and way of life then you will be accepted. |

I love the American accent! And I think Americans are great...I talk to some really nice people from America on here. I think you have nice and not so nice people in every country. The thing is you can't just move to Australia just because you want to. You will need to have a job that is in high demand over here ...marriage is an option but they are getting strict on that and there are rules in relation to that which could take years in some cases. |

The 'hate our accents and think we are loud obnoxious idiots' is just stereotyping, just like how people think we say g'day to everyone we meet and everybody is extremly friendly. We're not, we are just like anybody else. Some people may think that but a majority don't, come over and see for yourself, we'll take you for who you are not where you come from. :) |
