Summer is the "wet season" in the Tropics in Far North Queensland which includes Cairns.
There has been inches of rain and now flooding in North Queensland lately.
From news.com.au
The great sodden land - MORE than 60 per cent of Queensland is covered by floodwaters and more devastation is expected as two lows threaten to develop into cyclones.
The monsoonal downpour is the most severe in more than 30 years.

Also Google - North Queensland Floods.
The whole country is not having a heatwave nor is the whole country having floods. We live in a big country we don't all have the same weather at the same time.
If you want to check the weather try either -
The Bureau of Meteorology website

or

it will be wet.
The roads around Bowen and Cardwell whould be open again today, or tonight.
There is another Cyclone (Hurricane) that is expected to form off Cairns in a few days. It is expected to be weak so if it was to hold you up, it will not be for too long.....2 days max. So it will rain - A LOT
it should stop raining once you get down to Bundaberg, Gympie or as far south as the Sunshine Coast.
I am just north of Brisbane and while we do have the odd rainy day, it is nice and warm today.
So be sure to pack rain gear, but also bring your hat, sunglasses etc; because it wont follow you the whole way down unless there is a Low Pressure system further down the coast |

At the moment there is still torrential rains and flooding around Cairns. Some towns are completely blocked off and you won't be able to access.
From Brisbane south it isn't raining and unlike the southern states NSW isn't experiencing the horrible heat waves either. The warmest we've had the past few weeks is just over 30C and thats in the west.
If you can switch your trip the other way it may help. Otherwise you might find you need to leave Cairns a little earlier then you hoped for. |

its their summer at the minute so u will hardly see any rain if any! last week there wer reports of temperatures of 43 degrees in melbourne, so i would say u may need to pack more sun screen, hats, light clothing etc than ponchos and umbrellas!
enjoy ur trip! wish i was going! |

Australian weather and the seasons
Summer: December to February
Autumn: March to May
Winter: June to August
Spring: September to November
Warm but sometimes it gets cold so mostly light clothing but bring a coat just in case but bring mostly light clothes. Apparently it's summer there in February and fall begins in March so I bet a lot of your trip will be hot. |

Well I doubt there'll be alot of rain... the whole country just had a major heat wave and its still pretty hot... there was some flooding up north but other then that there hasn't been alot of rain... you'll just have to check the weather guides closer to when you come... but it rarely ever rains... |

it barely ever rains in aus.
thats why its a desert.
they even have water restrictions in place.
dont worry. you wont see any rain. |
