Would you be in favor of Australia becoming a republic?

Australia must become a republic. We cannot follow the foreign policy of the UK anymore. What do we need the Queen for anyway she does nothing for us and visits from the royal family cost us a fortune and for what?. As for times of war don't forget America and England need us as much as we need them. It's time for us to grow up.
The flag should signify all Australians.

Yes if it can be achieved cheaply and we don't elect the president - I don't want any extra political hoo-ha, it would be terrible if it became more like the American system.
I'm not too fussed about the flag, a flag that was easier to draw would be kind of nice.

our country is already run like a republic so we might aswell make it official. ultimately its about national pride. same with taking the union jack off our flag, its about national pride. like the canadians, they removed the union jack from their flag back in the 1960s and they now have a cooll flag that unites them all.

and i cant think of any cons. some people seem to think it`ll upset our ties with brtiain. my question is what ties? britain ceased being our main ally in 1942, theres no vital ties between us anymore. we dont even have a defense pact with each other. the only thing that brings us together on the political world stage nowadays is the fact that we both have america as our main ally and protector.

It should be the subject of a referendum.
If we did become a republic, it would not necessarily mean having to change the money or the flag.
The Hawaii state flag contains a Union Jack, and Hawaii is part of a republic.
Fiji is a republic and still has the Queen on it's coins.

I don't have any english blood in my veins and neither do my ancestors, I have no affiliation to england.

the english stopped being important to us a long time ago, economically, ethnically and militarily.

I think it'd be good, but i'd need to see the wording on the first referendum be simple and not go into the electing a president wording, as the previous ref q had.

The union jack would probably have to go... i don't think there are any countries that previously were under the British crown that now continue to keep the union jack in their flag....

I really am not so strong on this anymore (older, you know). I think it's the Aussie adage, "if it aint broke don't fix it".

maybe in the future ... but not in the next 50 or so years. it would be sooo exspensive what with changing all the money and the flag etc. i agree that money could be much better spent on other things. personally i don't feel that our relationship with england is hindering our growth..but that could just be me

It destroys the history of our country. We have a very strong relationship with England and always had. I'm talking about this in terms of how we were to this day. It will be a big move if we were to become a republic. Our Flag, Emblem and a lot of other things would be changed but it is not in our authority to say if we should or not unfortunately.

i dont want a new flag and personally i really dont like kevin rudd aka cruddy ruddy. I prefered johnny.
But i really dont care and its not really up to one person to decide, we'd have to have a referendum and stuff like that which will cost the govt heaps. I dont know why we cant just saty how we are and use the money saved on a referendum to make more hospitals or something that we actually need.

I think it would be a waste of time and money. Australia has a good relationship with England and the system works well. I imagine things like the currency, national anthem, flag and other such things would also have to be changed. It would be very costly and unnecessary.

I believe we are better off as we are.
If we were a republic, we would not have the support we have now & would be susceptible to more attacks on our country. We are lucky we havne't had more!! I think it is because we have the support from England & America.

But that is not to say that if we were our own country we couldnt sustain our own cultural beliefs & identity

I guess each to their own. I dont think there will ever be an agreement in this topic
